Historia
2018. Belinda Alvarez has returned to Texas for the wedding of her best friend, Veronica. The farm is the site of an urban legend, la Reina de las Chicharras - the Queen of the Cicadas. In 1950s South Texas, a farmworker from San Luis Potosi, Mexico, is murdered. Her death is ignored by the town, but not the Aztec goddess of death, Mictecacíhuatl. The goddess hears her dying cries and creates a plan for both to be physically reborn by feeding on vengeance and worship.

I really wanted to like this.
Revisado: 08-26-24
The author needs a better editor. I found many inconsistencies. But let's talk about the narrator. She is obviously not a native speaker, I get that. She put a lot of effort in pronouncing the big difficult words but not enough on the simple ones like "virgen". The language threw me out of the story every time. I wanted to love this book but I just couldn't. Maybe the physical book is easier to read?

Set in a Lower East Side tenement in the early days of the COVID-19 lockdowns, Fourteen Days is an irresistibly propulsive collaborative novel from the Authors Guild, with an unusual twist: each character in this diverse, eccentric cast of New York neighbors has been secretly written by a different, major literary voice—from Margaret Atwood and John Grisham to Tommy Orange and Celeste Ng.

This, all of this.
Revisado: 03-30-24
Like many others the COVID 19 pandemic has lingered in my mind like a nightmare that I still find hard to believe wasn't just that. This book is sublime. It brings together so many different voices that in the end sound eerily familiar. This book hit all the right spots with me. The loneliness, the horror, the disbelief and even sometimes the humor. I loved it, all of it

A beautiful tribute
Revisado: 01-02-24
The memoir gives an insightful look into Chinese culture, especially from the first generation immigrant point of view. The book had me in tears by the end and wanting to go home and hug my own imperfect 85 yr old immigrant mother.

Yeah .... it's bad
Revisado: 06-02-23
The author/main character/narrator in this novel is so ANNOYING I almost couldn't' finish the book but I choked it down after having actually paid money for it. Now I think the author owes me damages. The narrator comes off as an immature, self centered, co-dependent narcissist. i immediately thought of Emily in Paris and lo and behold she mentions it in the story. I couldn't stand that show either. All of her deep revelations sound ridiculous. Had she never really appreciated those around her? Had she really thought a man would complete her? Shallow, shallow, shallow.

Historia
Among the most celebrated and beloved novels of 2021, Anthony Doerr’s gorgeous third novel is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope—and a book. In Cloud Cuckoo Land, Doerr has created a magnificent tapestry of times and places that reflects our vast interconnectedness—with other species, with each other, with those who lived before us, and with those who will be here after we’re gone.

This is what I hope for every time I dive into a book. The narrator was great at translating the beautiful narrative acrobatics by the author. I liked this more than his previous book, which was still great.

I hope there's a sequel to this.
Revisado: 02-03-23
I just discovered this author through her debut novel All the Ugly and Wonderful Things and I'm entranced. this book is equally riveting and wonderful. please write a sequel to this story because I was enchanted like I haven't been for a long time with a book. It is original, gritty and utterly romantic. I live the authors was of turning the unlikely into reality with her stories and i look forward to moving on to the next book.

I haven't hated a book this much in a while
Revisado: 10-19-22
I struggled to finish it. The characters are caricatures, the ending sucks, the main character is shallow, immature, spoiled and self centered I've ever read. The dynamic with her family and her disabled brother is unbelievable. Hated Hated Hated it.
