Historia
The worst thing to ever happen on Hemlock Circle occurred in Ethan Marsh’s backyard. One July night, ten-year-old Ethan and his best friend and neighbor, Billy, fell asleep in a tent set up on a manicured lawn in a quiet, quaint New Jersey cul-de-sac. In the morning, Ethan woke up alone. During the night, someone had sliced the tent open with a knife and taken Billy. He was never seen again. Thirty years later, Ethan has reluctantly returned to his childhood home. Plagued by bad dreams and insomnia, he begins to notice strange things happening in the middle of the night.

Compelling and surprising mystery
Revisado: 04-16-25
This was my first Riley Sager novel. I enjoyed the little-by-little reveal and lingering intrigue used throughout the story. The characters felt real and lived-in; they were brought to life admirably by the narrator. It was an all-around enjoyable experience. I would happily read/listen to another story by the author and/or narrator.

Compelling conclusion
Revisado: 11-20-24
I flew through this final installment of this series because book 2 left us on a precipice of so many outcomes. I enjoyed the summation and resolution of the trilogy but would have liked a little more expediency in reaching the final conflict. Narration was fabulous as always; it adds the perfect ambience for the series.

Well done but lengthy exposition.
Revisado: 02-07-24
I am an AVID Jeff Wheeler reader and Emily Woo Zeller listener. This is something like the 20th book I’ve read/listened to by Jeff. I am also a big wuxia fan so I was thrilled when this series was announced and released. While the story comes together toward the second half in a way that is satisfying, the first half moved a bit slow. I started and stopped this novel twice before finally making it through on this third attempt. I think I will probably come back for book 2 at some point but am going to take a detour into other stories for a bit. If the characters continue to pop up in my mind during that break, I might reconsider my opinion of the story. All in all, the world building and lore are still strong like all of Wheeler’s books and the intrigue of what lies beyond the death wall does capture my attention. Emily Woo Zeller does a wonderful job narrating and adds authenticity to the narrative that might otherwise be lacking with a different reader. Worth a listen/read, just be prepared for a lengthy period of exposition and set-up.

Historia
Once upon a time, in the magical land of San Francisco, there lived a not-so-ordinary girl named Laurel Pettigrew. She was supposed to be the Chosen One. The plan was simple: She would vanquish the great evil Tybus in an epic battle. But destiny had other ideas, and Laurel's performance in the whole heroics department was a colossal flop. Now, instead of being a legendary hero, Laurel's the resident pariah of the magic realm. And what’s worse, the dark wizard Tybus swooped in, took over the realm, and forced all supernatural creatures to live under his tyrannical rule.

A rollicking good time! Snarky urban fantasy at its best!
Revisado: 11-24-23
This is the exactly the type of urban fantasy I adore. You’ve got clever writing, complete storytelling, fleshed-out characters, and a charming narrator to boot! The plot progresses nicely and each of our main characters share the space of its progression nicely. The snarky, self-deprecating humor strewn throughout adds a healthy portion of humor and keeps things light without detracting from the serious nature of the mission. I loved every second and hope to have a chance to visit Third Eye and its colorful, supernatural inhabitants again!

Historia
In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, a disturbing social media trend emerged: a large number of yoga instructors and alt-health influencers were posting stories about a secretive global cabal bent on controlling the world’s population with a genocidal vaccine. Instagram feeds that had been serving up green smoothie recipes and Mary Oliver poems became firehoses of Fox News links, memes from 4chan, and prophecies of global transformation.

Thorough and thoughtful
Revisado: 11-16-23
As a listener of the Conspirituality Podcast, I was excited to here about this book. The topics and timelines covered are vast yet the exploration of them throughout this novel scales them down in a way that’s understandable and digestible. I realize now that my experience with and base knowledge of the “major players” in the conspirituality space is far less robust than I thought. I learned so much about different movements, different people, and myriad overlap between them all. The narration of the book is excellent and brings a balanced tone of compassion and concern. Being a nonfiction text centered around a rather disheartening topic, listening can get a bit weighty. Take it in chunks and digest the different parts over time, and you won’t be disappointed.

Audie Award, Fantasy, 2016. As the smallest dragon in the Heartstriker clan, Julius survives by a simple code: keep quiet, don't cause trouble, and stay out of the way of bigger dragons. But this meek behavior doesn't fly in a family of ambitious magical predators, and his mother, Bethesda the Heartstriker, has finally reached the end of her patience.

Fun, imaginative fantasy romp!
Revisado: 07-03-23
Having read Rachel Aaron’s Minimum Wage Magic trilogy, I figured I should see who the Heartstrikers were and what they were all about. Just as with her other series set in the Detroit Free Zone (DFZ), there’s a pleasant mix of magic and mayhem and plenty of unique elements to keep you interested and guessing as to how things will resolve. I didn’t find Julius as compelling as Marci so parts of the story dragged for me. Overall, it’s very fun and light-hearted but with enough consequences to give weight to the conflict. Vikas Adam did a great job bringing the different characters to life with multiple accents and inflections to individualize the cast. If you’re looking for a whimsical, intriguing urban fantasy, definitely give this book a try!

Revisado: 01-30-23
The characters and world-building were beautifully brought to life and woven together. The detail and history of the world is rich and filled with torment and triumph in equal measure. The narration is wonderful! Annie does an excellent job of establishing different voices for each character and truly brings them to vibrant life. I loved every minute of this story and greatly anticipate it’s continuation in a follow-up book!

Raised by unconventional Irish Catholics who knew "how to drink, how to dance, how to talk, and how to stir up the devil", Kate Mulgrew grew up with poetry and drama in her bones. But in her mother, a would-be artist burdened by the endless arrival of new babies, young Kate saw the consequences of a dream deferred.

Heartbreaking, mesmerizing, & triumphant!
Revisado: 10-05-22
Kate is a superb storyteller and weaves words and experiences together with such power and grace simultaneously. Her storytelling style is nearly allegorical, it’s easy to start thinking she’s holding something back and hiding her true feelings behind the imagery. While that might be true at times, she strategically delivers nuggets of such raw truth, you can’t help but feel the roughness on your own skin, in your own being. Her narration brought the retelling of her loved experience to vibrant life and adds a layer of authenticity that pulls you up alongside her as if engaging in a fireside chat. As brave and bold and resilient in real life as she is on screen, Kate Mulgrew is herself a triumph and her memoir is a gift to all who read it.

This sequel is a satisfying, rip-roaring good time from start to finish. The new revelations and subsequent dressings down of certain unsavory characters is glorious! I laughed aloud, cheered aloud, and immediately began the third installment (conclusion) of this astounding space opera masterpiece by Scalzi as brought to vibrant, brilliant life by the masterful intonations of Wil Wheaton!!
