I must confess, I’ve never actually read the original Dr. Dolittle; my experience has previously been limited to the Rex Harrison movie and a children’s picture book I used to read to my son when he was small. So I’ve only heard about the racist aspect of the writing that necessitated this “ reboot“ of the original. I can well imagine it, though... well done!

At any rate, I found this version most enjoyable, and perfect for my particular purpose: namely, sleep! It’s a gentle, meandering tale, pleasant and interesting without being overly exciting or violent (an important quality, for me at least, in a bedtime story). The doctor and his animal and human friends travel around by land and sea, encounter people and animals both good and bad, make wonderful discoveries, run into problems and solve them. The doctor is unfailingly good, yet also human, and his friends care about him and try to help him, and he, them. Although I’m glad I listened to the story from the beginning, when I fell asleep and missed a bit, it didn’t feel terribly critical… I know I’ll listen to the whole thing again, and I’ll get all the bits eventually. 😉

James Langton is one of my very favorite narrators, and I knew he’d be perfect for this book... in fact, seeing that he was the narrator convinced me to buy it. His mellifluous voice is always a delight to listen to, and I enjoy the narrative choices he makes and the many different accents he gives the various characters. There is a humorous, whimsical quality to his reading here that is different from much of his other work. Delightful! 😊

I was curious to try this, and I suppose it’s good I did because now I know that I simply do NOT like ASMR. Maybe it’s because I’m highly sensitive… Maybe it’s because I have a history of abuse. Whatever, I found the experience definitely disturbing. Rather than relaxing me, listening to the voice and the sounds put me on high alert, and made me feel unsafe. When he started talking about laying tissue paper on my shoulders, I turned it off. No thank you!! But then… I don’t enjoy horror movies either… And I suspect, now, that there is a connection. Different strokes...!
