Historia
Gail Baines is having a bad day. To start, she loses her job—or quits, depending on whom you ask. Tomorrow her daughter, Debbie, is getting married, and she hasn’t even been invited to the spa day organized by the mother of the groom. Then, Gail’s ex-husband, Max, arrives unannounced on her doorstep, carrying a cat, without a place to stay, and without even a suit. But the true crisis lands when Debbie shares with her parents a secret she has just learned about her husband to be. It will not only throw the wedding into question but also stir up Gail and Max’s past.

Terrific story, Anne Tyler does not disappoint
Revisado: 03-29-25
The only problem with this lovely story is, I wish it were longer. I was especially sad to say goodbye to the extremely well-drawn characters. It's the story of a wedding told through the eyes of the bride's mother, who at the same time also faces a big transition, her career. That's the bare outline. Read it for the whole cast of characters and for the interesting, satisfying plot. Anne Tyler does it again.

Historia
In the summer of 2016, a divisive presidential election was underway, and a new breed of right-wing rage was on the rise. Emily Witt, who would soon publish her first book on sex in the digital age, had recently quit antidepressants for a more expansive world of psychedelic experimentation. From her apartment in Brooklyn, she began to catch glimpses of the clandestine nightlife scene thrumming around her.

A world previously untold
Revisado: 03-02-25
Emily Witt is a terrific writer, of course. She writes for The New Yorker, for goodness sake. And in this book Witt tops herself, carefully, precisely, and with enormous heart. A world heretofore not ever fully described comes to life, and within that fantastic world of scores of drugs and raves, the author's inner world and closest relationship are also plumbed. Oh yes, and much of this during Covid, with heinous killings of Black people, and the awful first trump presidency. National crises and crimes are expertly interwoven with the author's personal story and always interesting analysis. Highly recommend.

Male protagonist of a rom-com. Loved it!
Revisado: 04-04-24
I loved so much about this book! I almost always read more serious literary fiction, and I just felt like something light. The NYT review was good so I tried it. Light yes, but also funny, insightful, and always interesting, with great characters and plot. The narrator has a delicious British accent to boot.

Fast read, creative ideas, nice writing
Revisado: 10-16-23
Straub writes in a fluid manner, so it’s a fast read. Yet, the daughter’s father relationship is well fleshed out and I cared for both of them. The time travel piece is well woven into the story, and doesn’t take over.

Historia
If I Had Your Face is a riveting debut novel set in contemporary Seoul, South Korea, about four young women making their way in a world defined by impossible standards of beauty, after-hours room salons catering to wealthy men, ruthless social hierarchies, and K-pop mania. Together, their stories tell a gripping tale at once unfamiliar and unmistakably universal, in which their tentative friendships may turn out to be the thing that ultimately saves them.

I liked each character but found that the book as a whole did not cohere well. Narrators are great.

Historia
Fuyuko Irie is a freelance copyeditor in her mid-thirties. Working and living alone in a city where it is not easy to form new relationships, she has little regular contact with anyone other than her editor, Hijiri, a woman of the same age but with a very different disposition. When Fuyoku stops one day on a Tokyo street and notices her reflection in a storefront window, what she sees is a drab, awkward, and spiritless woman who has lacked the strength to change her life and decides to do something about it.

Love the author, excellent writing

Having read a later book, Breasts and Eggs, I realized the many parallels between the two novels. I love the depth of the author's characterizations in both novels.

Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have heard before.

Another fabulous book by Gabrielle Zevin
Revisado: 12-19-22
I adored Zevn's novel, ELSEWHERE, for its characters, wistfulness, and beautifully detailed magic world. In TOMORROW AND TOMORROW AND TOMORROW, I may not have known it was the same author, but again I thoroughly enjoyed the novel. Here, I'm a lot older and have fewer interests in common with the characters but I found the story great and also liked learning a bit about gaming. And Hamlet even repeatedly appears. Looking forward to Zevin's future novels.

Historia
Teenage Eulabee and her alluring best friend, Maria Fabiola, own the streets of Sea Cliff, their foggy, oceanside San Francisco neighborhood. They know the ins and outs of the homes and beaches, Sea Cliff’s hidden corners and eccentric characters - as well as the swanky all-girls’ school they attend. Their lives move along uneventfully, with afternoon walks by the ocean and weekend sleepovers. Then everything changes. Eulabee and Maria Fabiola have a disagreement about what they did or didn’t witness on the way to school one morning, and this creates a schism in their friendship.

Unlike anything you've ever read
Revisado: 12-01-22
This is a tremendously insightful, interesting book. I met characters so new or foreign to my experience, and the author drew them fully and with beautiful detail. Themes around family, especially female relationships and the desire for children, were believable and never mundane. The book does focus a lot on single parenting and sperm donation, so if this is upsetting to you, you might not read this book right now. Otherwise, read it!

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Light and meaningful at the same time
Revisado: 08-22-22
A surprise to me, Remarkably Bright Creatures is not only a quick read, but also one that is unusually well written and also full of well-drawn characters and honest emotion. Overall, the narration is excellent but sometimes the characters sound similar. However, I never felt confusion over who was speaking (clearly conveyed by the author). It was fun having the octopus as a character. Highly recommend.
