Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

character development

I liked the many references to a variety of literature. The story has inspired me to pursue those other works.

Historia
Sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes deeply joyous, The House on Mango Street tells the story of Esperanza Cordero, whose neighborhood is one of harsh realities and harsh beauty. Esperanza doesn't want to belong, not to her rundown neighborhood, and not to the low expectations the world has for her. Esperanza's story is that of a young girl coming into her power, and inventing for herself what she will become.

Childish Author
Revisado: 06-26-22
This immigrant story is told poetically. Some of the lines are truly verse and beautifully metaphoric. However, I did not care for the childish voice of the narrator as I felt the story was being told looking back on childhood. I think I would prefer this story read by a young woman and not someone who sounds as if they are 10-12 years old.

Historia
Five years. That's how long Coyote and her dad, Rodeo, have lived on the road in an old school bus, criss-crossing the nation. It's also how long ago Coyote lost her mom and two sisters in a car crash. Coyote hasn't been home in all that time, but when she learns that the park in her old neighborhood is being demolished - the very same park where she, her mom, and her sisters buried a treasured memory box - she devises an elaborate plan to get her dad to drive 3,600 miles back to Washington state in four days...without him realizing it.

Random Music
Revisado: 07-10-21
I had read this book several years ago and was looking forward to reviewing the story. The reader did a good job representing the various characters. The only thing I did not like was the random music that would fade in and out at odd moments. The music was not necessary to support the drama of the story, in fact, it interrupted the flow of the scenes and served no purpose. If the music track was removed, I would have rated this telling with 5 stars.
