The Sun, Moon, and stars are crucial to your daily existence. The perfect regularity of the heavens is the only guaranteed part of life and inspires deep religious and philosophical ideas, while unexpected events such as eclipses and comets incite fear. Experience this ancient outlook with noted astrophysicist and historian of astronomy Professor Bradley Schaefer of Louisiana State University. An award-winning teacher, Dr. Schaefer takes you around the world, exploring the close relationship that people thousands of years ago had with the sky.

2 Hours of Information in 24 lectures
Revisado: 07-08-21
I listen to a lot of The Great Courses and enjoy learning in general. this course is going to be boring for anyone with even a rudimentary understanding of ancient astronomy. 5 minutes of info is drawn out over the course of entire lectures. the professor speaks slowly with pauses so long that I kept having to check that my phone did not turn off in the middle of the lecture. I only finished because I started.

Historia
New York state assemblyman, assistant secretary of the Navy, New York City police commissioner, governor of New York, vice president, and, at 42, the youngest president ever: in his own words, Theodore Roosevelt "rose like a rocket". He was also a cowboy, a soldier, a historian, an intrepid explorer, and an unsurpassed environmentalist - all in all, perhaps the most accomplished chief executive in our nation's history.

short and packing depth
Revisado: 10-11-20
the book is well written. however, it does not go deeply enough into complex topics for the reader to thoroughly understand. great book of you want to write a freshman college paper about Roosevelt. lacking if you want to thoroughly grasp the man and the times. Glosses over many seminal moments.

Historia
This is the first volume in a bold new series that tells the stories of all peoples, connecting historical events from Europe to the Middle East to the far coast of China, while still giving weight to the characteristics of each country. Susan Wise Bauer provides both sweeping scope and vivid attention to the individual lives that give flesh to abstract assertions about human history. This narrative history employs the methods of "history from beneath" - literature, epic traditions, private letters, and accounts - to connect kings and leaders with the lives of those they ruled.

an excellent intro or recap to EVERYTHING
Revisado: 09-02-20
As the title states, this is an excellent review or intro to everything in the period covered. My only complaint is that it doesn't actually go to the fall of Rome. it goes to the reign of Constantine and the rose of Christianity.

narrator...
Revisado: 08-31-19
This is the second course of his I've taken. I didn't mean to take a second one but I wasn't paying attention when I purchased it... The content, IS great but the, DELIVERY is awkward. Constant pauses in strange, places AND putting emphasis, on the wrong WORD. If you read my previous sentences exactly as they are typed, you'll have a good idea what your in for if you get this book. Like I said, the content is great. If you can tolerate his speech patterns, it's a good course.

Historia
Generations have been told that Aaron Burr was a betrayer: of Alexander Hamilton, of his country, of those who had nobler ideas. But that version has been shaped by historians and writers from the 18th century on who were blinded by tabloid reports and propaganda created by Burr's political enemies during his lifetime. It is time to discover the real Aaron Burr.

A thorough history that seemed overtly biased
Revisado: 08-09-19
Scott Brick is the beat narrator out there. I learned a lot of new things about a misunderstood man. T author rightfully pointed out that all of the other founder's, most notably Hamilton and Jefferson in this case, were flawed men but he seemed overly apologetic and made excuses for many of Burr's flaws or misdeeds and I did feel like that style, or my perception of it, affected the credibilty of the book as a whole.
Overall, good and definitely worth the read but not excellent/5 stars for me.

Historia
Andrew Roberts' Napoleon is the first one-volume biography to take advantage of the recent publication of Napoleon's thirty-three thousand letters, which radically transform our understanding of his character and motivation. At last we see him as he was: protean multitasker, decisive, surprisingly willing to forgive his enemies and his errant wife Josephine.

Great biography. Very thorough
Revisado: 06-24-19
My only wish is that it more closely described specific battle tactics but i realize that would have been tesious and excessive for a biography about a person, not a history of the battles. overall, a fascinating story.

Historia
At a time when men and women were prepared to kill - and be killed - for their faith, the Protestant Reformation tore the Western world apart. Acclaimed as the definitive account of these epochal events, Diarmaid MacCulloch's award-winning history brilliantly recreates the religious battles of priests, monarchs, scholars, and politicians - from the zealous Martin Luther and his 95 Theses to the polemical John Calvin to the radical Igantius Loyola, from the tortured Thomas Cranmer to the ambitious Philip II.

FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY do not listen to this narrator
Revisado: 03-29-19
I routinely listen to "dry", detailed histories and love a good in depth lecture. Being raised Lutheran but always more interested in history than religion itself, I was ecstatic to find such a long book, with great reviews, on the reformation. Unfortunately, the narrator is the worst I've ever experienced.
I usually dislike a new narrator when I start a book but he or she grows on me and I eventually zone in on the book. Well, 2 days into my 35 minute one way work commute and 1) I have no idea what's been discussed during the first 2 hours because I can't focus on the book through the awful narration, 2) I am energetic and ready to go when I get in the car. Within 15 minutes of listening, I'm riding on the rumble strips and almost rear ended someone because I was literally falling asleep. I had to turn on rap and drive on the highway with the windows down to recover from my stupor that Anne Flosnik put me in.

Historia
North America was settled by people with distinct religious, political, and ethnographic characteristics, creating regional cultures that have been at odds with one another ever since. Subsequent immigrants didn't confront or assimilate into an "American" or "Canadian" culture, but rather into one of the 11 distinct regional ones that spread over the continent each staking out mutually exclusive territory. In American Nations, Colin Woodard leads us on a journey through the history of our fractured continent....

a bit of s stretch but some good insights
Revisado: 03-26-19
I found the arguments in this book to be a bit too simplistic and sometimes a stretch. As an Ohioan who has lived in Appalachia, the Midlands, and Yankeedom, I do recognize marked differences between regional cultures but I think that in today's interconnected society, a bigger difference can be seen when simply comparing urban and rural vs. one culture to another. The obvious exception here is Yankeedom vs the Deep South struggle which I do accept as the defining struggle of our country's history.
Also, I got the sense that the author disliked the "Dixie block" (which is probably justified because, well, racism and bible waiving) which I felt tainted some of his observations.
In the end, the author made several pointed observations about contemporary and future North America that I thought were very valuable to ponder. specifically, we (Ohio and the rest of the North) should get rid of the south and/or join/move to southern Canada (not the part where they speak French).
