Historia
In the Welsh borders, isolated by heavy snow and flooding from the thaw, cut off from telephone access, a tragedy has occurred. Old Dr Robinson known to be 'a menace' on the roads has met his end in a car crash, his big saloon thrown from the track down the steep hillside. But when the police arrive there is more to the tragedy than meets the eye: why was there a second body - an outsider to these parts - in the back of the vehicle?

totally taken by this golden age mystery
Revisado: 08-04-24
i liked the setting - remote English farmsteads long ago. the author did a good job of describing the life of people at this time & place. and, if it wasn't accurate, it seemed very believable.
the mystery was truly mysterious; the procedural satisfying; the investigators polite, thoughtful & successful (devoutly to be wished); and the resolution a surprise - at least to me.
the performance was compelling.
highly entertaining. i would love to hear more in this series.

Historia
The world is poised for social and political change, but England holds tight to its traditions, classes, and prejudices. When an explosion in London kills two policemen and seriously injures three more, many believe that anarchists are the culprits. But Thomas Pitt, commander of Special Branch, knows the city's radical groups well enough to suspect otherwise: that someone with decidedly more personal motives lit the deadly fuse.

disappointing
Revisado: 04-27-16
A potentially good story not helped by belabored descriptions of character motivations and an overheated reading. The behavior of the characters in the courtroom was truly unbelievable.
I generally enjoy the author's work & the narrator's, but this, to me, is not a good example.

The victim’s name is Zenia Gadney. Her waterfront neighbors can tell him little - only that the same unknown gentleman had visited her once a month for many years. She must be a prostitute, but - described as quiet and kempt - she doesn’t appear to be a fallen woman. What sinister secrets made poor Zenia worth killing?

Basic story interesting & the narration was good. However, it really dragged in the middle. Unbelievable courtroom behavior on the part of lawyers, judge & witnesses. Who done it not a surprise. I would say this is not Anne Perry's best.

Same book, different title
Revisado: 02-28-14
This is another workmanlike addition to Adler Olsen's series. However, note that Audilble is offering the same novel under the title "Guilt" and published by Penguin Audio, using a different narrator. I didn't check to see if the translator is the same.

Historia
In The Keeper of Lost Causes, Jussi Adler-Olsen introduced Detective Carl Mørck, a deeply flawed, brilliant detective newly assigned to run Department Q, the home of Copenhagen’s coldest cases. The result wasn’t what Mørck - or readers - expected, but by the opening of Adler-Olsen’s shocking, fast-paced follow-up, Mørck is satisfied with the notion of picking up long-cold leads. So he’s naturally intrigued when a closed case lands on his desk: A brother and sister were brutally murdered two decades earlier....

Compelling series
Revisado: 12-09-12
I was totally enthralled with Keeper of Lost Causes even though the story of the victim is horrifying. I liked this second in the series, but I felt the story had less punch and less humor overall. That said, I still think this is an above average crime story and well worth the credit. I'm curious to see how the recurring characters develop in books to come.
