Jack Reacher with airplanes

I was familiar with the author's time travel series and was pleasantly surprised to learn he is a pilot and mechanic from a podcast. In the podcast he notes how avgeeks will cringe at most media presentations of aircraft operation and how he wanted to write something that wouldn't do that to his readers. And he delivers. While this story doesn't have any crazy dogfights or races (maybe on the next one?) all of the aviation specific aspects are great and didn't cause me to cringe (except for when an airplane gets damaged). The non-flying part of the story plays out like a Jack-Reacher story.

Economic and political analysis minus the vitriol

A regular listener of James and Antony on Words & Numbers. This plays out like an extended version of the podcast, but is great to have on hand as a reference. Not necessarily as a "gotcha" for when talking politics with your enemies, but as a chance to show your friends not only what the data is on certain issues (ie minimum wage), but also what the data means when interpreted appropriately, and the societal and governmental history that got us there in the first place.

The great thing the authors demonstrate is that we don't need masters degrees in economics or political science to think about government policy.

Good story though I'm ready for closure

The story seemed to fly by and I still enjoy the world and the characters. Bad things happen to primary and secondary characters so no one is safe. But while I enjoyed going through it I find myself ready for closure in book 5.

mild spoilers
The setup was to find and take the metal islands, but through a course of events the book is about getting to the metal islands and leaves a cliff hangar on taking them. Thinking back I can't think of any complaints. I guess seems a lot of action happened, but only half the "promised" events happened.....I dunno, I'm not maybe that's a sign of a good cliff hanger?

I'd been told about this by a friend (I do like post apoc), but the movie coming out reminded me to finally read this. The world is great. As for the world, things make sense. The vehicles and cities are cool and fun. The characters are believable, with each having an agenda and doing what they think to be the right thing to do in such a way that you can at least empathize with each one (even the villains).

I really enjoyed it, eagerly looked forward to the next chance I would have to listen. The last several chapters had me setting the speed to 2X so I could finish before my lunch break was over. Maybe it's because Thanksgiving was last week, but now that I'm finished, I sit back and think, "I'm thankful Philip Reeve wrote this, because I really enjoyed listening to it." Now onto books 2-4

Fun and unique take on super heros comics and fate

I enjoy when breaking the 4th wall is done well. This book is written around breaking its own fourth wall of sorts. Especially as someone who has worked on writing a story and planning what happens to characters, which ones will live and which ones will die, it's interesting to think about how characters would respond given the chance to meet their authors.

There is plenty of super hero action. If you get the complete book it comes with several color pages of actual comic book art made just for this story. They are very well done and left me wishing there was more.

All in all a fun read that makes you think too.

For those that loved Firefly, you need to check out J.S. Morin's Black Ocean series. My simple description is, he was sad Firefly didn't have more episodes, so he created a book series to fill that void. There are some differences like the inclusion of wizards and magic, that make it unique, but like Firefly, it has a lovable crew of unique and continuously developed characters, and a ship that is always about to fall apart.

My instinct on sequels is to avoid them because it always goes downhill. But I was very satisfied with the conclusion to the series. More of what I liked of the first two. Nothing more nothing less.

As an aviation nut I enjoyed the technically correct airplane jargon. The story walks you through very easily though if you aren't an aviation nut.

The story is like a crime thriller finding the cause of the incident.

The characters behave like real people trying to do their respective jobs.

Only hiccup is the chapters where very short and sometimes a couple sentences were copied from one chapter to the next. Not a big deal, but that's the most negative thing I can think of. Loved the rest of it.
