Let yourself be because Mel, your friend and mentor, understands what you're going through and has some suggestions about how to make it. It's uncanny how personable the writer and narrator is, enough to elevate a simple concept to a mantra.

An eye-opening account of a woman that never gave up, and lived many lives thanks to her attitude. Raw, insightful and full of suspense, without stooping to melodrama or preaching.

Historia
In Unruly, David Mitchell explores how early England's monarchs, while acting as feared rulers firmly guiding their subjects' destinies, were in reality a bunch of lucky sods who were mostly as silly and weird in real life as they appear to us today in their portraits.

Great attitude, poor delivery
Revisado: 11-25-24
This is not a history book, in that it doesn't cover the range of English rulers and actually gets some historical facts wrong.
This is the outpouring of a man's love about history and his sincere interest in delving into what had shaped his present British reality. That is the most interesting part of the whole book. The author's perception of past and present, which is given in a highly evocative way.
However, his take on things is simply that. A man's take on things. How highly you think of the book depends on what you think of the man. And if you have no opinion on the man, then the book serves more as an opinion you'd hear at a social gathering, entertain it for a bit, then let it go.

Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

The fox and the baby
Revisado: 10-29-24
I read this book without knowing that the events were inspired by a true story, that Martha and her husband existed. Now that I do know, the whole narrative becomes much clearer. This is a straightforward narration of a crime, the crime that begot it, and the society within they took place. It transports you to a different time, and makes you wonder how different it really was. A good read.

Beautifully crafted
Revisado: 09-10-24
This book is polished to the T. Each character has a well developed backstory, anchored in real-life events. Everything is weaved, so that it pays off in the end. And there is a murder or two with a big twist. So what's the problem? It lacks inspiration, the story is too structured, the dialogue is too perfect, everything is too thought-out. It's a lovely read that transports your mind, but not your soul.

Historia
Hidden in the heart of the old city of Barcelona is the 'cemetery of lost books', a labyrinthine library of obscure and forgotten titles that have long gone out of print. To this library, a man brings his 10-year-old son, Daniel, one cold morning in 1945. Daniel is allowed to choose one book from the shelves and pulls out La Sombra del Viento by Julian Carax. But as he grows up, several people seem inordinately interested in his find.

A thoroughly satisfying read
Revisado: 07-27-24
Are you ready to be transported by magical realism? Descriptions cannot do justice to the floating feeling with which this novel leaves you.
Here's the only downside: timelines are too jumbled, so it can be difficult to follow what is really happening in the beginning. Keep with it! It pays off in the end.
The narrator does an excellent job immersing us in a world where history, magic, danger and love dance around.

Grrreat story, even better movie
Revisado: 06-24-24
This is a classic book that spun a classic film. In a rare turn of events, the book manages to pack way more suspense and action than the film, but the film portrays the characters in a much more interesting light. This is especially true for the women and girls, who, in the book, are relegated to the sidelines, as nagging wallflowers. All in all, a breeze-through read!
