Historia
After a lifetime with a grief-stricken father and a self-absorbed brother, Felicity isn't daunted by sacrifice. But when protecting her father means falling afoul of the curse that has swallowed the Summer Castle, and Prince Justin along with it, her own safety is not all that's at stake. The prince's monstrous form is the least of her concerns—the whole castle has been trapped by his pride, and his absence from the capital is driving the kingdom to ruin.

fun fairytale with soft, slight magic and clean romance
a little too easy
a little bit of adventure
I still didn't like Justin at the end, though. He acts protective physically but keeps lashing out with words to do just as much harm.

unfulfilling
Revisado: 06-06-22
Too much was said, not shown. Too much was given, not earned.
Example, in one of the fights, the MC suddenly sees a gap in the bad lady's defenses and uses a spell to attack and knock her down.
There was no trial and error. There were no try-fail cycles. When things finally did work, it wasn't effort but "instinct" and "the magic wants it."
Plus, it has been too long since I read books 1 and 2, so I was barely interested in the characters. Plus, the magic system is soooo soft with almost no rules.

satisfying
Revisado: 08-20-21
Diana Wynne Jones is one of the few writers who can write a truly satisfying ending. I'm delighted every time.
My husband asked if this book qualified as a satire. I say no, but it /is/ satirical. Or it has satirical elements?

Historia
A lifelong pursuit of knowing God should embody the Christian's existence. According to eminent theologian J.I. Packer, however, Christians have become enchanted by modern skepticism and have joined the "gigantic conspiracy of misdirection" by failing to put first things first. Knowing God aims to redirect our attention to the simple, deep truth that to know God is to love His Word.

okay
Revisado: 04-03-21
This book seemed to quote hymns more than the Bible, which is saying a lot.
I liked the chapter on adoption (God adopting us), but many of the chapters seemed off topic or irrelevant to my life somehow. Or many of the points in each chapter seemed irrelevant? He said a few, "Christians do this" sayings, but I don't.
Also, his arguments were not well strung together to build toward a well-supported conclusion. Maybe it was not enough transitions? Not enough stating of what he was trying to show? Hmm.

Historia
On a dark, wintry day, Eliza Grey receives a mysterious letter from her ailing Nana Mora begging her to come for a visit. This is an easy "Yes". Eliza has always preferred Nana Mora's beach cottage on St. Simons Island to the apartment she and her mom call home in the city. The island is a magical place where stories and legends grow as thick as the Spanish moss dangling in the trees. Now, Nana Mora's eyesight is fading, and there's something she wants to show Eliza before it’s totally gone: a mythical place locals refer to as Sirens Harbor.

This story was written for old people. It had themes like aging, divorce, mental facilities, dying, going blind, losing loved ones, more divorce, and more that just don't fit in a MG book.

barely red riding hood
Revisado: 07-11-20
I really liked this book. If I had anything bad to say, it would be that it didn't really remind me of Red Riding Hood. The other tales are closer to the originals while adding some extra plot elements and making the characters actually interesting. This book strayed a bit further. However, it was a great tale. I was skeptical whether I'd enjoy reading about a princess who was a villain from another book, but Ava had a strong inner voice with her worries about appearing weak and losing control. She was likable in her struggles despite initial shortcomings (and rudeness!).

Might be better than the other books in the series
Revisado: 06-01-20
I loved this book. I loved the characters and the romance and the plot and the secrets and the magic and the revelations.
This book kept the core of the Little Mermaid story but improved upon it so that it wasn't so, well, dumb. The Disney movie has insta love and stupid teens. Like, how did Ariel really expect Derek to like her when she can't speak (could she even write?)?
In this book, the princess and prince have a month to get to know each other, they disagree on things, and they have hobbies and dreams in common. There's an entire subplot about the mer queen too.
As always, Cellier has written a fantastic tale full of believable and interesting characters who are as noblebright as they are likable.

Billy Kelly's This Is a Family Show! is a stand-up comedy experience (with music) that parents and kids can enjoy together. From jokes about nocturnal animals and microwaves to Ben Franklin and people throwing turtles, the whole family will laugh along while listening to this comedian’s unique perspectives. It’s comedy toast with the crust cut off. Who needs all that crusty talk about dating, politics, and money, anyway?

Historia
Science fiction allows us to go places we can only dream of seeing - other worlds, distant stars, entirely different galaxies. While not every story is concerned with the hard science behind space travel and other futuristic ventures, fiction can give us amazing insight into what we could be capable of and what we dream of doing. In these 10 lectures, Professor Erin Macdonald interweaves real science and the achievements of the imagination to reveal the truth that underlies our favorite stories and sheds light on what the future may hold.
