well-narrated story
Revisado: 02-12-20
The story was good, though it got somewhat predictable as it went on. What saved it from being a 3-star book was it was well told and even better narrated. Even though I saw a few of the plot twists coming, the action sequences were excitingly paced and the characters rich, which made it an enjoyable listen.

Historia
The Zombie War was the longest and most costly conflict that Britain has ever waged. No one knows the true figure of those who lost their lives in the long years of the war and tragically too many have lost their lives in the years of peace that have followed. Life expectancy is a shadow of what it was and many diseases and ailments that science thought it had eradicated have returned. Many of those who survived the war have since died, taking with them the stories and memories of the most devastating and important struggle that mankind has ever waged.

if you liked World War Z, you should like this
Revisado: 10-30-19
Not only does it borrow the format from World War Z, but several plot points and conventions (the Redeker plan, quizlings, zombies freezing in winter), so it's easy to imagine this being a continuation of the Max Brooks novel. hopefully this was the intent, and hopefully done with permission.

Everyone’s heard of Nostradamus. No one’s heard of Philibert Montmorency. One was a legend. The other, not so much.... A newly discovered Nostradamus prophecy has taken the internet by storm thanks to "The Oblivion Doctrine", a group of online conspiracy theorists. Apparently the end is nigh. And in case anyone’s interested, nigh is definitely a Tuesday. Doctor Ally Oldfield, professor of Medieval Languages, is summoned to Lyon for a second opinion. She’s not happy about it. But then again she’s rarely happy about anything.

funny, intriguing, and addicting
Revisado: 10-26-19
I thought the hopping between time periods would be confusing but I found the story easy to follow. The story is very clever and slowly pulls you in deeper and deeper. At the end, I couldn't put it down as two separate but interconnected climaxes in two different time periods came to a head. An excellent story, one I highly recommend.

Historia
What happens when the President of the United States governs one Tweet at a time? When the elected leader of the free world may not have a firm grasp on the names of government agencies, much less an understanding of their intricate inner-workings? In the days following the 2016 inauguration, government personnel searched for answers that didn’t exist, while White House staff scoured halls for employees who would never be appointed.

An important book for every American
Revisado: 05-18-19
The main theme of the book is what the American government does for it's people, sharing stories of unsung heroes and programs that most Americans know nothing about. From people at NOAA learning how to better earn residents of tornadoes to the work done by the DOE to prevent toxic waste from poisoning local communities and tracking down loose nukes, the book shines a light on hard-working civil servants who's sole goal is to make life better for everyone.
An undercurrent that runs through the book is the negative impact of the turnover with the Trump administration. Time and time again, it shows a small army of civil servants ready to brief the incoming administration, only to sit alone in a large conference room. It illustrates the dangers of an administration that is not only ignorant of what the government does but unwilling to learn anything that runs contrary to thier preconceived notions.
I recommend this book to any American, regardless of political party. While the book is critical of the Trump administration, it is largely nonpartisan, praising programs created by both Bush and Obama. This book is an education of what our taxes actually pay for, and it's to make America better.

The story grew on me
Revisado: 05-13-19
When I started this book, it was okay. Didn't mind listening to it, but probably wouldn't miss it when it was done. By the time I had reached the end, I was way more invested in the story. Reached the end while listening to it on a road trip, and my wife was wishing there was more. Now, I might continue on with the series to see what happens next in this alternate version of American. Starts as a 3 star book but grew to a 4 star.

This is a solid short story with strong writing and a solid performance. It's hard to criticize it without spoiling, but it's like an old joke you've heard before but retold in a masterful way.

A great episode for fans of the series
Revisado: 03-23-19
Overall, if you are a fan of this series then you will love this book. It's one of the better entries of the series, and the combination of Barry J. Hutchison's writing and Phil Thron's performance had me laughing out loud as I listened.
This is book 10 in the long-running series, and while it's an excellent entry in the long-rjnning series, it's not a good starting point for those new to the series. As an example, early in the book the main character heals rapidly. How and why he can do this is never explained. Fans of the series know why, of course, but if you were reading the book cold it might have been easy to get lost. This book is the start of a new trilogy so there were characters and storylines that felt like they didnt fit. First part of the book, the crew meets a new character on an alien planet, only to take off, leave him behind, and the real story begins. is this a setup that will pay off in future books? Only time will tell, but I was left wondering about the new character. there seemed to be a story there yet to be told.
I highly recommend not only this book but the whole series. If you are new to the series, however, you might want to start from the beginning and work your way to this entry as it's not a good starting point for newbies. As part of a bigger whole, though, it's an excellent episode and I am looking forward to the continuing adventures of Space Team

The Scarlet Virgins is a memoir of one woman's journey through the Christian Purity Movement. It wrestles with the experiences and temptations of her and her peers, including the temptation of apostasy, addiction, alcoholism, anorexia, depression, self-harm, and suicide. The author seeks to restore the truth to broken souls: It is Christ who makes us pure.

Definitely meant for people of faith
Revisado: 11-07-18
When chosing this book I hadn't realized it was written for other Christians in mind. Being someone not of any faith myself, I found some of it eye-rolling, but figuring I wasnt the intended audience I didn't factor it into my review. For the review I asked myself, did the author have a point to make, and how well was it made? On that scale, i feel the author was fairly sucessful.
Two major qualms I had with the book. First, the choice of narrator was odd to me. Not to say the narrator did a bad job - quite the opposite, he did rather well - but I felt it odd to chose a male narrator to voice the biography of a female author. Second, while the author deftly describes the problems and flaws of purity culture, I felt that the end where she describes switching from a life of abstinence to married life was glossed over a bit. It wasnt the point of the book, but it still felt like there was one more chapter that we didn't get to read. As I say, it wasnt the point of the book, so I didnt rate it too harshly because of it.
Overall, this book has a strong statement to say about purity culture and was told rather well, but it is a book about Christians for Christians.

Historia
Listen to the leaves rustling. Hear the wind building. These could be the first signs Gideon Berlander has found you. They could be the last sounds you hear. Gideon hasn’t been the same since that terrifying night in the cave, the night he changed forever - the night he became a wind caller. But the power to call upon and control the unimaginable force of the wind in all its fury has warped him, twisted his mind, and unleashed a virtually unstoppable monster. Those who oppose Gideon are destroyed...horribly. No one can escape the wind.

A good horror story with a unique feel
Revisado: 07-30-18
This is my first book from the author so I didn't know what to expect, but I found an interesting horror novel steeped in Native American folklore. I should warn you, the book took a dark turn. I dont want to say much more for fear of spoiling things, but Cacek creates character you can really relate to and care about, so their pain becomes yours. My only complaint is I was left wanting more. The book is so rich with backstory, at first I thought I was reading the last book of a series, but as the book moves on the backstory unfolds for you. Still, I felt there was more story here, and I hope Cacek revisits these characters again.
