I don't know how Peter Grainger does it. I enjoy every one of these books more than the last one. I feel as though I could step into the world that he has built. The interior world of the characters and their relationships with each other are just as compelling and detailed as their physical surroundings and the circumstances driving each story. Gildart Jackson has done his usual beautiful job of narrating. As much as I would like to own these books in physical form, I cannot imagine experiencing these stories without his rich voice in my ear. Bravo!

I enjoy each of these books as much as the previous ones. This one in particular had as its theme the long-term ramifications of the crime, and how good people struggle to protect the ones they love even after they've made terrible mistakes. The interpersonal dynamics of the squad and their personal lives continue to intrigue. I'm very sad that I'm getting close to the end of this series.

A fascinating story that jumps back and forth in time, educates and entertains. I learned a great deal in the most enjoyable way. These books are good for my heart and my brain.

The author weaves memoir, history, science, original poetry and a bit of travel into detailed settings within which he illuminates his own meditation journey and how it has improved his personal and professional life. There are suggested exercises and some practical tips, but what I came away with was a desire to explore how to begin my own practice, more than a list of what to do next.

The concepts he explores are subtle, but he always seems to find 'le mot juste' which perfectly expresses his point. His writing is well crafted, and I sometimes found myself rewinding just for the joy of listening again to a particularly satisfying sentence or paragraph. And of course, his humor and gentle Irish lilt only adds to the enjoyment.

That said, I'm not sure that the audio format is the best way for me to retain this information over the long term. I'm in the US and the physical book was not available here, but I have ordered it from a UK bookseller so that I can read it again in that form and mark the passages that I want to remember. I also expect the white space on the pages will help delineate the topics and points in a way that is not possible in an audiobook. As he says, there is meaning in emptiness.

I would have liked to know more about how he kept going during the first 6 months to a year as he struggled to quiet his "monkey mind." Where did he turn for inspiration when his resolve would flag? What resources did he find helpful along the way?

Still, I can't remember ever having been exposed to a book and immediately wanting to experience it again, as I did here. I highly recommend this for anyone who is curious about the power of meditation to improve the human condition--for one of us, or all of us.

Aird's books are witty and learned, but the humorous/ literary tangents in this title wearied me, and I hold a degree in English and grew up reading British mystery novels. They might have been easier to take in written form, or from a narrator with a less dry and less nasal delivery. Much of the dialog was spit out so rapid-fire that I missed salient points or lost track of who was speaking. I'm also sure that I missed many of the inside jokes. After this I'm not sure I want to attempt more of her books in audio format. It's just too much work.

Dervla McTiernan's books are not strictly murder mysteries where all the clues are presented and there is a moment when you can finger the murderer if you are clever and imaginative enough. instead, the stories in these books unspool in the way of real life, a little at a time, in glimpses and longer backstories. The characters are rich and believable, and the antagonists are not caricatures. The backdrop of everyday life in Ireland set in the pubs, on the small roads among the fields, and in the flats and cottages--not to mention the mercurial weather--makes the setting of these novels an interesting addition to the story without taking it over, the way it might in a typical cozy mystery. The dialogue is crisp and clear, but thoughtfully rendered. I highly recommend all of her books.

This is a quick, suspenseful story. The author is great at her characterizations as well as her dialogue. There's a nice little twist with the title. Really enjoyed it.

The author has the rare ability, like John Grisham and a few others, to write in such a way that the words fall away and the scenes come alive without conscious effort from the reader. A terrific story with well-drawn, believable characters who are all changed by the end; and none more so than the main character, whose drive for retribution at any cost becomes a quest for the truth.

These characters are little more than caricatures: the handsome, loner detective; an insensitive but stupidly brave deputy; several wealthy, corrupt officials/businessmen. The author puts his characters through the emotional and physical wringer as they flail about, trying to recover from the latest devastating turn of events. These books read like B movie scripts as women throw themselves at our hero's feet and the bodies pile up while realism flies out the window. Meanwhile any character development occurs too slowly to hold the reader's interest. I listened to 8 of these books, hoping they'd improve, but I'm done.
