Beautifully written as only Cormac McCarthy is capable of but intensely disturbing if there is even a modicum of historical truth to the story. Rarely does one encounter a human being in the narrative with a modicum of morality in this world of 'kill or be killed'. McCarthy paints a picture where humans are either predator or prey and life is brutal and devoid of any meaning or redemption. The only heroes to be found are the animals who, despite enduring untold brutality at the hands of their captors, show some level of loyalty and compassion.

A nice complement to the Arthurian saga

I've read many books on King Arthur and his court and Morgan was always a secondary character. I loved how this book covered her life prior to joining Arthur's court and highlighted her intelligence, heart, determination and reason for her later actions, especially her time at the nunnery in which her pursuit of knowledge was unquenchable.
Also, Merlin has mostly been portrayed as a hero, supporting Arthur throughout his life. This version portrays him as a conniving, power hungry magician whose power is learned and not so innate as Morgan's.
Looking forward to Ms. Keetch's second book picking the story up where it left off. I hope that it is narrated by Ms. Kirby - she did a beautiful job with this first volume.

There are no new weight loss recommendations in this book, but it clearly outlines why certain diets work or don't work and dispels conventional wisdom such as 'calories in, calories out', or 'exercise more'. I found the explanation of how different food is processed differently in our bodies and how they affect various organs was very interesting, even if all the science is not in.

Although Elizabeth Gaskell's first novel, this is a well written and developed novel. I am happy to hear that Mr. Gaskell changed the name of the novel from John Barton to his daughter, Mary Barton, for Mary is the focal point of the novel and its heroine. Juliet Stevenson's reading is superb, not only capturing the various dialects but also the depth of emotions portrayed by the characters. Although dealing with the issues of industrialization and the rise of unions in the mid-19th c, it is a tale that is as true and applicable to the struggles of workers and the challenges of economic disparity in today's world as it was then. I cannot recommend more - also recommend Gaskell's North and South, and Wives and Daughters.

Interesting, but not what I expected

this was described as a "story", so I expected a much more conversational, accessible narrative. Instead, Pat Shipman goes into excruiciating details around DNA, chromosomes and mutations among verious dog remains throughout the world. I'm pretty detail oriented but I got a bit lost sometimes, although maybe just bored with the details is more applicable. Mr. Shipman should have focused more on the human-dog relationships and what evidence remains as to what that relationship was like vs. the genetics.

After reading a few books on AI, I was hoping that this update from Martin Ford would have new information. Besides learning about a few new people at the front of AI and machine learning research, the book didn't provide any additional information.

I'm a huge fan of Elizabeth Gaskell's novels but this one was very disappointing. It appeared she had an idea to write a story based on the historical conflicts between Catholics and Protestants in England, Ireland and Scotland, mixed in with a little mysticism and witchcraft, but never gave much thought to the actual plot.

Highly recommend! One of the best non-fiction audible books I've encountered. Who knew that the COVID pandemic would make this information so personally intriguing? My husband and I listened to it while driving to and from our vacation at a National Park and were enthralled. The author covers a lot of scientific history without getting bogged down too much in details.
The writing is superb and there were many sections we laughed out loud! It was amazing to hear Dr Fauci's significant contributions to the understanding of our immune system after seeing him so much as an expert during the pandemic.

I was on the fence about this one - the beginning was slow and really annoyed me, but was representative of the social norms around women's sexuality at the time. The best part comes in the second half when the author confronts what is really important in her life and how it affects her daughters.

I loved the way Professor Robert J. Allison arranged the content of this course! Too often historical lectures follow a 'time line' perspective which can be dry. Prof. Allison chose to approach this amazing man's life in a very different way that sequentially built upon his widely varied areas of genius. This is a course to go back to again and again and enjoy!
