Bird’s eye view of the crusades

The book presents a very broad view of the crusades and their impact on Western Civilization as a whole. It covers not just the 200 or so years of the Levantine crusades, but the cultural impact of the Arab civilization and the role it played in the development of Europe. You’ll have to find more books for any particular area, but this book will whet many interests.

Excellent introduction

This is a very good, flowing narrative introduction to a vast field of scholarship that will require years of study. Undoubtedly many things are glossed over and inadequately covered, but there’ll be time enough for further study after this great start.

Magnificent reading!

I sampled the Audible readings and this seemed the absolute best of what was available. Having listened to the entire audio book I can say that not only Carlton Griffin’s reading (always first rate), but the entire production leaves the others in the dust. This Audio book is a five star experience!

I first read “Doc” Smith’s books on my summer vacation from college in 1972. I was very pleased to see them available on Audible. I hope Alistair Cameron will continue recording both Lensman and Skylark books. He’s a great reader! Thank you.

A great sampler of Hellenic thought

This work stands together with “Greek as a Treat” by Peter French as sampler boxes of Hellenic thought. Both serve as a broad overview of the wellspring of western thought. From here you can deepen and broaden your appreciation of Greek authors beginning with the introduction that sparks your interest and moving outward with more and varied reading. This can start you along a lifetime of enrichment that has been eclipsed and neglected in modern college education. Either or both of these books will be the first among many others in a growing library of entertaining, enlightening and enriching books. Bon voyage!

A useful addition

As I'm not using Pimsleur as my only, or even my main study material (writing and reading are a huge hurdle and Pimsleur doesn't even touch them). The course is a good supplement as a "classroom on the go". Watch out for some mistakes though.

The Rebels

A great piece of historical fiction. I was a little annoyed by the mispronunciation of the name von Steuben (it is FON SHTOY-BEN rather than VON STU-BEN) hence four stars instead of five. The only flaw in an otherwise great performance.

The birth of America

From the writings of Diderot and Rousseau to the speeches of Samuel Adams, the whole sweep of the war of independence seen from the viewpoint of a poor French lad who, by chance (and expert writing) stumbles into the path of such Names as William Pitt, Samuel Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Paul Reviere and others as he is caught between a nobleman's life in England of King George III and a tradesman (and ultimately, soldier) in the American colonies. Although I was put off by the frequent lapses into "Harlequin romancesque" porn, it wasn't enough to to take any stars off of the five star review. Although very well written and researched, that makes it less than suitable to bringing up young patriots in these morally bankrupt and seditious times that we live in. Parental guidance definitely needed.

That said, this is truly a great work of historical fiction and with patriotism and so much knowledge injected into it, a very educational read!

Mind blowingly Awesome!

This takes Bram Stoker's masterpiece to a new level! Audiobooks don't get any better than this! As good as an audio play. I especially liked the masterful way those brilliant actors and actress did the voices. Five stars plus!
