Historia
The Banished Lands has a violent past where armies of men and giants clashed in battle, but now giants are seen, the stones weep blood, and giant wyrms are stirring. Those who can still read the signs see a threat far greater than the ancient wars. For if the Black Sun gains ascendancy, mankind's hopes and dreams will fall to dust....

What a way to start off an epic fantasy series 👏🏼
Revisado: 03-13-25
Wowowoowoww what an entry into an epic fantasy series
My Quick Takes:
- 5/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
- Language 🤐 mild
- Spice ❤️🔥 none
- Content 🤔 death, killing, murder, themes of war
I couldn’t put this one down. I listened to the audio and absolutely binged it and I would’ve done with same with the physical book. Wish I had the physical to follow along in some parts with the audio for a more immersive experience.
It took about 40% for all the characters and points of view to come together for me. I really liked that some of the POVs started overlapping and getting to know each other. Outside of keeping the character and kingdoms names straight, the realm and world building was very easy to follow especially as it draws on biblical allegory and imagery (I really liked that aspect)
I’m very glad I started this as a bookclub read. Having others to ask questions of was really helpful as all the characters were still being introduced in the beginning. I’m planning to keep going straight through, or as straight through as I can. What a book, I’m officially hooked on this series.

Historia
Bayr of Saylok, bastard son of a powerful and jealous chieftain, is haunted by the curse once leveled by his dying mother. Bartered, abandoned, and rarely loved, she plagued the land with her words: From this day forward, there will be no daughters in Saylok. Raised among the Keepers at Temple Hill, Bayr is gifted with inhuman strength. But he’s also blessed with an all-too-human heart that beats with one purpose: to protect Alba, the first girl child born in nearly two decades and the salvation for a country at risk.

Loved the narrator

My Quick Takes:
- 4.5/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
- Language 🤐 none
- Spice ❤️🔥 fade to black
- Content 🤔 death, violence, killing, blood runes, child abduction, stillbirth
A coming of age, Norse mythology based fantasy filled with heartache and longing. The first 60% of this book felt a bit slow to me, but in the final third I saw the draw of Amy Harmon to readers. While this is technically the first in a duology, the book wraps up nicely and can act as a stand alone.
I started the book on my kindle (available on Kindle Unlimited) and switched to the audio at 60%. I loved the narrator and it helped immerse me more fully into the storyline.

Fantastic narration of lyrical writing
Revisado: 01-14-25
For fans of Rebecca Ross, Ellen McGinty has a beautifully lyrical writing style.
My Quick Takes:
- 5/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
- Language 🤐 none
- Spice ❤️🔥 none, just a kiss or two
- Content 🤔 violence, killing
- Reader Age 🎟️ YA
A fantastic book that only left me wanting more. I have so many questions about the lore and world building that I would love to see fleshed out. Hope to see more adventures and trials from this realm that McGinty beautifully crafted. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator, Jane Maree, was PHENOMENAL.
