Historia
Eighteen years old, pregnant, and working as a pizza delivery girl in suburban Los Angeles, our charmingly dysfunctional heroine is deeply lost and in complete denial. She's grieving the death of her father, avoiding her supportive mom and loving boyfriend, and flagrantly ignoring her future.

Accurate portrayal of a lost high-schooler from 2011
Revisado: 10-01-24
Pregnant and disconnected from it, in a broken home, with no plan for her life and in a stagnant relationship, the main character is floundering as all eighteen year olds would be in her situation. Dissatisfied with life, she develops a limerant attachment with one of her customers, who is also a mess, and throughout the novel she's forced to come to terms with everything.
Dialogue was spot on for the time and ages of the characters and her prose is not obtusely descriptive. If you're feeling nostalgic, get the book. It brought me back to my high school years.

Take it from a man whose family background includes brawls, visits from "aliens," star-billing on FBI wanted posters, and, oh yes, an altercation with the Swedish Mafia - families can be brutal! But because we all have one, Louie Anderson has written this honest, funny, and brilliant survival manual for anyone who's ever choked on the F Word.

Love his stand up, loved his book more
Revisado: 10-01-24
Other than the semi-poor audio, the book was recorded a while ago, this book kept my attention. I never read any of his other works, but love his comedy and bought it on a whim. I dont regret it.
He presents what he's learned over his lifetime in a fun format that is also heartbreaking at times. He turned his less than great childhood into a retrospective and even recall.
Worth the audible credit.

Historia
Chinese was the earliest truly global cuisine. When the first Chinese laborers began to settle abroad, restaurants appeared in their wake. Yet Chinese has the curious distinction of being both one of the world's best-loved culinary traditions and one of the least understood. For more than a century, the overwhelming dominance of a simplified form of Cantonese cooking ensured that few foreigners experienced anything of its richness and sophistication—but today that is beginning to change.

Very engaging and insightful
Revisado: 10-01-24
I bought this book blind after it being recommended from a memoir regarding a 1st gen from chinese immigrate parents. I love food history and the author interwove her experience with Chinese culture and cooking with deep history and what recipes mean to certain provinces and how much food is a part of Chinese culture.
If you're interested in China, food or want a good read, pick the book. Her prose alone was worth it.

Historia
Little Marek, the abused and delusional son of the village shepherd, believes his mother died giving birth to him. One of Marek’s few consolations is his enduring bond with the blind village midwife, Ina, who suckled him when he was a baby. For some people, Ina’s ability to receive transmissions of sacred knowledge from the natural world is a godsend. For others, Ina’s home in the woods is a godless place.

Weird. Really weird, bordering grotesque. It'll be ringing in my head for a while.
Revisado: 01-11-24
I'm no stranger to weird novels or even gross novels. After Morrisons Beloved and some Faulkner, nothing really phases me. But, congratulations to this author, she grossed me out and made me put the book down multiple times.
The description is so pointed that I can see and taste the prose. The characters are so far out there, but very believable that something like this probably could've happened. Unfortunately, I hated it. No character was redeemable, likeable or relatable, at least to me. I couldn't wait until it ended and disliked the overall story.
I enjoyed Eileen and bought this book blind thinking it would be the same. Nope. The author magnified the grotesque by tenfold. This book, for me, is a pass.
But! If you like dark tales, beautifully sculptured prose, you'll really like this book.

Historia
In White Trash, Nancy Isenberg upends assumptions about America's supposedly class-free society. Poor whites were central to the rise of the Republican Party in the early 19th century, and the Civil War itself was fought over class issues nearly as much as it was fought over slavery. Reconstruction pitted poor white trash against newly freed slaves, which factored in the rise of eugenics. These poor were at the heart of New Deal reforms and LBJ's Great Society; they haunt us in reality TV shows like Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and Duck Dynasty.

Well researched, well narrated and prompted my own investigation into how wealth inequality shaped today's world.
I originally listened because I like the narrator from a previous book, The Poison Squad, and figured I'd give this a go. Im glad I did.
