Informed by the death of a beloved brother, here are the stories of childhood, its thicket of sex and sorrow and joy, boys and girls growing into men and women, stories of a brother who in his dying could teach how to be most alive.

This is how a poetry audio book should be produced
Revisado: 06-19-23
I've reread this collection many times over the years. It's brilliant. As an audio book, it was the perfect balance of reading a book and doing a poetry reading. There was some commentary of individual poems, but only enough to give space to the other ones while slowing down the temptation to power through all the poems. I hope other poets model their audio book versions of their collections after this one.

Revisado: 02-02-22
My only complaint is that this was not long enough! I wish they had gone on for a few more hours! not only were the poems and people moving, what these poets had to say on engagement, that moved beyond what I thought would be a cliched approach, was provocative as well as inspiring

What a surprise
Revisado: 10-13-16
I originally thought I would not probably enjoy this book because it would probably be too technical or metaphorical, without any real world value. I'm happy to say I was completely wrong. Not only did the author convey complex information and theories in a way that anyone can follow, they also provided real world situations and dilemmas with applications of the theories. And it was an entertaining read. Definitely worth the read.

Interesting, illuminating history and theories
Revisado: 07-30-16
Would you listen to Beyond Boundaries again? Why?
While the writer's attempts to make a scientific field more personal with humor and anecdotes mostly fell flat or were distracting rather than illuminating, the overall description of the history, theory, as well as the experiments. more than made up for those bad bits of writing. It's not just a book of hopeful speculation, but provides insights into current achievements and practical applications of the theory. Great stuff.

Historia
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

Better characterizations than TV series
Revisado: 07-09-16
I saw the show and fell in love immediately. However, whereas the show portrays the heroes as opposites (Norrell as only vain and jealous, Strange as bumbling, good natured and concerned with others), the book develops a much more nuanced characterization that shows how they are ultimately more alike than different, which made the storyline much richer and the ending much more satisfying.

Historia
Kraków, 1939. A million marching soldiers and a thousand barking dogs. This is no place to grow up. Anna Łania is just seven years old when the Germans take her father, a linguistics professor, during their purge of intellectuals in Poland. She's alone. And then Anna meets the Swallow Man. He is a mystery, strange and tall, a skilled deceiver with more than a little magic up his sleeve. And when the soldiers in the streets look at him, they see what he wants them to see.

You'll fall in love with language
Revisado: 06-14-16
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes; I've already sent it to a friend as a surprise gift.
What other book might you compare Anna and the Swallow Man to and why?
Although they are completely different stories, there is something about the storytelling that reminds me of "The Book Thief"--that it's fantastical, like a fairy tale set in the middle of the real world, but also the POV just makes you see the everyday as wondersously new.
Which scene was your favorite?
Too many to say.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Again, this story is so poignant and compelling, and the writing so fresh, all the scenes were moving. But the ending is really beautiful.
Any additional comments?
The writing is so gorgeous and fresh. The images are often built from terms found in linguistics. Really, the writing is so beautiful, you'll fall in love with language (again). This really is one of the best books I've read in a while.

Historia
Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

Come for the story, stay for the gorgeous writing
Revisado: 05-14-16
Would you listen to The Golem and the Jinni again? Why?
Yes; the narrator made each character come to life.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The Golem. The writing echoed the character's own development. So rich and fully drawn.
What does George Guidall bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The tale is...unexpected. I had no idea what the story was about beyond reading the first few lines of the book jacket before I decided to just take the plunge. I was worried it was going to be a fairy or magical world book. It is, but all the characters are grounded in real human beings.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Too many to name. But I will say the last sentence or two were some of the best last lines I've read in a long time.
Any additional comments?
For some reason, this book reminded me a lot of The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. Such interesting characters and fresh takes on an old story line.

Historia
In this eye-opening account, Cal Newport debunks the long-held belief that "follow your passion" is good advice. Not only is the cliché flawed - preexisting passions are rare and have little to do with how most people end up loving their work - but it can also be dangerous, leading to anxiety and chronic job hopping. After making his case against passion, Newport sets out on a quest to discover the reality of how people end up loving what they do.

A bit of a strawman argument
Revisado: 05-01-16
The premise of this book is that the Follow Your Passion hypothesis is wrong. And if you interpret that as meaning following your passion without a plan, then sure the author is correct. The author should have also looked at individuals who espoused that idea AND also were successful. He would have probably seen that those people also had good plans and work ethics along with their passion. But that aside, the advice is generally good. Just not really new. In fact be borrows a lot from other how-to authors and really just repackages them as a theory contra a weak theory. But again, the advice is good so it's hard not to recommend this book.

Loved it. I particularly was amazed at how she was able to use White's biography as a vehicle for her own. But even more important, she was able to transform the story itself into something infinitely more powerful and universal than merely a personal struggle with grief over losing a loved one.
