Our fearless author, A. J. Jacobs, tackles a new intellectual adventure, an exploration of the most influential book in the world: the Bible. He determined that the best way to explore the Bible was to live it, as literally as possible. For one year.

2nd time reading/listening
Revisado: 01-22-25
The first time I read it was 2010 after I had just stepped into the path of Judaism. From there on to being a Karaite Jew. Then 3 years and 2 pilgrimages to Israel later I became Israelite Samaritan.
I just finished the audiobook, its has been 14 years, a divorce, and what seems to be a lifetime later. It was even better and funnier than I remember. I only wish her had delved into the original Israelites, the Samaritans. At would have taken it even deeper into the history of it all.
I highly recommend it for anyone even curious about religion. I wish he would make a sequel.

Historia
Over two grim nights in Los Angeles, the young followers of Charles Manson murdered seven people, including the actress Sharon Tate, then eight months pregnant. With no mercy and seemingly no motive, the Manson Family followed their leader's every order. Twenty years ago, when journalist Tom O'Neill was reporting a magazine piece about the murders, he worried there was nothing new to say. Then he unearthed shocking evidence of a cover-up behind the "official" story, including police carelessness, legal misconduct, and potential surveillance by intelligence agents.

Meh……long winded.
Revisado: 07-25-24
It’s way too long with a lot of filler. He got the weeds while researching for 20 years. The second-half was better than the first half but very slow moving. I would say that governmental agencies probably did protect Manson and was using him as an informant of some sort, so in that sense, innocent people died that shouldn’t have, but again it could’ve been told in half the size of this book. I was never really fascinated with the Manson story, after this I still remain disinterested for the most part.

"Dean twisted the fiber optics wires together" and they worked 🙄....
Revisado: 12-01-23
Fiber optics don't work that way, and this story of Amazonian Women was too lame to carry over 2 books. Whoever authored this one sucks.
Also, the villain was reminiscent of a Stephen King style, very anti-climactic.
Suffered through it like a few duds in the past. hopefully this author was a one and done in the series.

One of the best yet.
Revisado: 06-28-23
One of the most epic storylines yet in the series. At first I doubted the author could pull it off, but I was wrong.
The story was spread out in 2 separate parallel plots, both remaining engaging for the listener.

the story is great, but Sound Engineering way off
Revisado: 06-12-23
The story was great, and it has a lot of meat to it as far as adding to the overall storyline past and future of deathlands. Even hints of the Outland scenario. BUT, the sound engineering, affects, and voice overs, seem very rushed and unpolished compared to the prior books.
I know the actress that played Mildred had health issues, and they had used somebody else a few books ago, but this time it was quite apparent it was the same person that does Kristi's voice, and it made it extremely hard to tell them apart at times. At one point there was a female security officer that you could tell was also the same person that did Dean's voice.
Towards the beginning the mix was also off because I know the same person does JB Dix and Doc, but you could really tell more than usual.
Anyway, the story itself is worth suffering through, I just felt they didn't do it the proper justice. many sound effects weren't even there like usual, leaving uncomfortable silence in the background when they were describing things that should have immense sound effects.
Just one man's opinion.

Pretty good. But, missed opportunity.
Revisado: 05-15-23
Warning, spoilers ahead:
It was a decent story. I'm ready for Dean to grow up enough to change his irritating voice.
There was an opportunity to end the story with them main villain going on and becoming a bigger part of the Outsiders series on the future. Maybe they will with his daughter, but doubtful. I haven't finished Outsiders past book 1. I need to finish this series first or I lose interest.

Far fetched...
Revisado: 01-16-23
SPOILER ALERT:
Far fetched even for this level of fiction.
I don't see them giving up access to that much and jumping that quickly.
I do believe they would've opted to risk staying and fighting it out inside.
ESPECIALLY given how many years they'd been searching for a redoubt with even 5% of this one.
I can only hope they go back and claim it in future books...
