Historia
First published in monthly parts from March 1852 to September 1853, this novel follows the fortunes of three pedestrian characters - Esther Summerson, Ada Clare and Richard Carstone. The story they tell embondies Dickens' merciless indictment of the Court of Chancery and its bungling, morally corrupt handling of the endless case of Jarndyce v. Jarndyce, giving the novel its scope and meaning.

I have read most of Dickens' works, but I could never quite get myself to read Bleak House. I was finally able to appreciate this great work by listening to it. This was an excellent example of the importance of audio books.

Historia
William Henry Devereaux, Jr., spiritually suited to playing left field but forced by a bad hamstring to try first base, is the unlikely chairman of the English department at West Central Pennsylvania University. Over the course of a single convoluted week, he threatens to execute a duck, has his nose slashed by a feminist poet, discovers that his secretary writes better fiction than he does, suspects his wife of having an affair with his dean, and finally confronts his philandering elderly father, the one-time king of American Literary Theory, at an abandoned amusement park.

It's hard to imagine a funnier or more charming book. I laughed out loud even when I had my own similar car accident.

I'm not sure what age this book is written for, but I think even books for adolescents should have a certain timeless and universal quality about them. This booked felt much more like stereotypic teenagers who just happened to be thrust into a time and place of magic. I tried to place myself into this book, but time again was repulsed by the trivial nature of the characters.

Historia
The American military is a tightly sealed community, and few outsiders have reason to know that a great many senior officers view the Iraq war with incredulity and dismay. But many officers have shared their anger with renowned military reporter Thomas E. Ricks, and in Fiasco, Ricks combines these astonishing on-the-record military accounts with his own extraordinary on-the-ground reportage to create a spellbinding account of an epic disaster.

A first rate battlefield history. I confess to be disposed to read about the Bush administration's failure, but in spite of that I thought this was a balanced narrative. One wonders, with the relative current stability in Iraq, if the author's conclusions would still be the same. But, to me this remains a classic treatment of an ill-planned strategically dubious adventure somewhat reminiscent of Anzio.

While tracking a demented serial killer, Detective Kurt Wallander is beset with obstacles: a department distracted by the threat of cutbacks and the frivolity of World Cup soccer, a tenuous relationship with a widow, and an unshakably haunting preoccupation with a girl who set herself on fire.

This is my third Mankell book listened to and the tremendous humanism expressed in these books is what makes them of interest. The only tiresome part is the frequency with which Wallender forgets his phone or his gun. Please!

Historia
This is the breathtaking adventure of the great Carthaginian general who shook the foundations of Rome. In the world's first "global" conflict, Hannibal Barca marched up and down the Italian peninsula for 18 years, appearing well nigh invincible to a Rome which began to doubt itself for the first time in its history.

Hannibal one man against rome
Revisado: 06-08-09
This book was an extremely lucid retelling of Hannibal and his campaign. It kept my attention, the battles were well described, and Hannibal became somewhat more of a person in spite of the limited direct information available about him.
