In his own words - lovingly so

One's own perspective and memories is much more valuable to this reader than any biography where someone else can interject their interpretation. Here, our author goes from childhood, trauma, war and more trauma and PTSD to finding his purpose and paving his own way with the support of his wife, who too suffered and showed that she is a survivor. A big heart has Harry that he inherited from his mother and duty to his fellow being from his family. Some sad truths, human weaknesses exposed but overall a telling that puts the tabloid press to shame (should they have any).

California Dreamin' Mystery

If you grew up is Southern California during the 60s, there are references in this book you will remember. It's a good story; a mystery that holds your interest. You'll like the characters as they are keenly developed.

Not my favorite

I found it arduous to get though and considered not finishing it. The last chapter was pretty good, it just took too long and tedious to get there. Frankly, the characters just weren't that interesting to me. Others may enjoy this slice of life tale of a supposed self-help sham that turns into life-long friendships. I am not one of them. The writer is indeed a talented wordsmith.

Loved it - an important story

The historical details, art details and compassionate portrayal of a real person of color "passing" in a culture that would punish her severely if found out make this a fabulous story, based in fact, and an important one to be told.
One realizes how far we've come as a society and how much more needs to be accomplished to be what we could/should become.

Another WWII Female Centric Spy Novel

As always, Kate Quinn does not disappoint. Her characters are fully developed, the story believable and her history researched and embellished just enough for intrigue by the reader/listener while providing a bit of educational value.

Marginal story at best

The author's previous works were more engaging with more depth to the characters and twists to the storyline adding suspense. I struggled through this one. The characters were pretty unlikable overall - realistically human in their faults and attributes but they were boring and ordinary. I found myself not really caring for any of them and as such the story failed me. The performance was ok.
