I’m confused as heck, but somehow I still loved it

It all seems intentionally obtuse. I was lost for most of it. But it was all so artfully done that I enjoyed being lost. I will absolutely listen to it again.

Delightfully innocent and engaging

So very surprised by this book. It’s at the same time adorable and gritty - a difficult feat and executed flawlessly. Give it a chance and be absolutely obsessed by the first chapter. Plus there are two more books in the series on audible, so you can binge! 10/10 already bought the other two.

Very good story but the reader was too halting for me to enjoy it

That’s really my only complaint. Her inflection was flat probably because I’m guessing English isn’t her first language. I would have rather listened to a more fluent reader with less authenticity in the accent, since it really just came off as a grade schooler reading a passage in a textbook without comprehending the meaning of what they were reading.

This book is the most singularly magical piece of fiction I have ever encountered. I am held spellbound every time I listen. Jim Dale may actually have a silver tongue. It’s one of the few works that has successfully made me feel someone else’s nostalgia like it was my own, and made me fall in love with every character. It is damn near as close to perfect as it could possibly be in my opinion, which I understand may or may not be shared with other people, but I hope it is, because if you can experience this book the same way I do, you too can believe that maybe there is still magic in this world.

Really enjoyed the journey

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this book, but I was pleasantly surprised. Not only does it follow the personal transformation of several characters exceedingly well, the way it's written makes it possible that actual harm could befall any of the characters without a huge impact on the flow of the story (meaning that it's possible the characters could die or be seriously injured, which ups the general suspense). The author seems to have gone to great lengths to research many aspects of the book, so it becomes very believable, and therefore easier to read because you're not distracted by idiosyncrasies. Overall, I thought this book was well-written, fast-paced, and thoroughly enjoyable! The reader's performance was exemplary, in my opinion.
