I was not familiar with Ms Godfrey and I thought the book was going to be about how sightings of cryptids fit into folklore and mythology, but she takes sightings of strange creatures seriously. It was really interesting. She does compare similarities of sightings distant to each other as evidence of similar creatures or even the same creature given a different name. Being originally from Michigan I did smile at the discussion of The Milford Panther, which turn out to be quite real despite wildlife experts repeatedly assuring us that there were no panthers in Michigan. So, maybe there is something real behind DogMan and the other sightings. Anyway, give it a listen even if you don’t believe in such things.

Anne Glenconner let’s us see what life for British aristocracy was like in the second half of the 20th century, and it probably isn’t what you think. Her husband suffered from some form of mental illness. Today he would hopefully be diagnosed and placed on treatment to control his mood swings, but at the time all one did was try to control the fallout as best you could. Her eldest son also experienced some type of disorder. Again, today he would have some type of medical intervention but at the time the advice was literally to ignore it and hope it would go away. It didn’t, and the consequences were ultimately tragic. Her younger sons have their own crisis to deal with. But at the same time she becomes a Lady in Waiting to her childhood friend Princess Margaret and has wonderful adventures and private moments. She relates stories of the Royal Family when they were still just minor royals and she and Princess Margaret and then Princess Elizabeth could go down to the beach and play together. She describes how her mother actually saved their estate with her ‘little’ pottery business despite her father’s condescending attitude. Her life has been full of highs and lows, and I’m glad she’s shared them with us.

While this is an excellent examination of the early life of Queen Victoria, the author spends a full third of the book discussing the life of Princess Charlotte of Wales. While the life of Charlotte was packed with intrigue and ended tragically the only real influence she had on Victoria was that her dying prompted "The Great Baby Race" in which Victoria was produced. The entire episode could have been easily outlined in one chapter, if that. I was also disappointed that the extensive narration of Victoria's life ended with the birth of Prince Albert Edward, later Kind Edward VII. The rest of Victoria's life is crammed into a Epilogue. I would have much preferred Williams to have discussed in depth how Albert's influence and Victoria's almost constant state of pregnancy formed her early years as queen, how she changed after Albert's death, and how John Brown and Mohammed Abdul Karim influenced her later years.

This is a wonderful retelling of the stories of the Norse gods. Neil Gaiman has a very expressive voice and gives each character their own characteristics that are consistent throughout the book.

I would love a whole series by this crew. The stories of the rivalries were interesting and the additional dialog, interjections, and characterizations added a bit of spice to the story.

The Total Money Makeover Audiolibro Por Dave Ramsey arte de portada

I know, I know, it’s narrated by Dave Ramsey. I’m going to be honest: l’ve never listened to Dave Ramsey’s radio show or podcasts. I know he’s well respected in the personal finance field and my coworker took his course and got a lot out of it, so I thought this book would be a good introduction. I’ll also confess I usually skip the first chapters and get right to the ‘meat’ of these kinds of books but I decided to listen right from the beginning. Big mistake. I don’t know if this is just how Ramsey usually sounds, but it was like he was personally disgusted with you for using the foolish money traps he was describing. Rent-to-own? Are you nuts? Lending money to family? What were you thinking? Buying a NEW car? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!?!?!? God help you if you are LEASING that new car. You are just too stupid for words.

Maybe this is just how he talks and if you listen to him on a regular basis you are used to it. Maybe he felt he needed to be ‘passionate’ about his subject to get his message across. I think I would get much more out of the physical book and do without attitude.

A great overview of the development of opera. Professor Greenberg explains how different languages changed how opera was constructed. He doesn't get into modern opera but he discusses the classic masters and their work. Ironically the clips of the actual operas are not always that great, but licensing has its limits.
