Historia
When the chairperson of a prestigious literary prize dies in suspicious circumstances, Robert Amiss (the token sane member of the judging panel) wastes no time in summoning Baroness 'Jack' Troutbeck to step into the breach. Speculation that a killer may be targeting the judges worries the baroness not in the slightest, it's the prospect of immersing herself in modern literature that fills her with dread.

Meh.

I am a big mystery fan and am always on the lookout for something new. I gave this one a try, but it didn't turn out to be my cup of tea. It wasn't terrible, and it was even sort of cute at times, but I thought the mystery was weak. It seemed as though the author wanted to make a statement in ridiculing literary pomposity and political correctness. Fair enough, I guess, but I was expecting something else.

Five men sat in a railroad compartment on the main train from London to Dover. The same five men boarded the Channel steamer and crossed to Calais, where they caught another train for Paris. By the time the train reaches Paris, we learn that one man is a detective from Scotland Yard, on the trail of stolen gems; one man is a murderer; and another, a corpse!

Fell flat

I love classic mysteries. I should have liked this. But I didn't. While the narrator was not great, he did differentiate between voices, and that is something that is often lacking in many audiobooks. No, the problem was the story. It dragged. There was a lot of tangents that didn't seem to add to the plot or characters. The author appeared to use 20 words when 5 would do. Sorry, but if you are looking for an overlooked gem reminiscent of the "golden age" of mystery, keep looking.

Historia
1942: Suzie Mountford, along with her boss and lover Detective Chief Superintendent Tommy Livermore, is on her way to investigate a triple murder: an entire family ruthlessly killed, their faces blasted off with a shotgun. The brutal murders of the Ascoli family are of more than usual interest to the Reserve Squad. Max Ascoli was the barrister who defended Golly Goldfinch, the facially deformed and mentally unstable freak who was captured using Suzie Mountford as a lure.

It wasn't bad, but I felt it could have been better. My expectation was that this would be a 1940's version of Elizabeth George's Thomas Lynley mysteries (there is that similarity of the aristocratic detective), but I didn't think Det. Livermore was all that likable. Mystery was okay, if somewhat predictable. The sub-plot was distracting. Grade = C
