When World War 3 erupts on American soil, it is up to some less than likely heroes to band together and stand tall against any and all comers as a once proud nation is brought to her knees. Cowardly terrorist attacks and indifferent global communities have isolated America as she spirals into a desperate bid for survival.

Another Right-Wing Nut Dystopia
Revisado: 05-29-16
I've read through several of these right-wing, survivalist, apocalyptic novels by now. There are all bad, very bad, but this one may be the worst of the lot. Novelistically, they break all the rules, and they this do it willy-nilly, without good reason so that it makes this seem amateur (which they are). "United States of Apocalypse" does all that and more. The plot is vanishingly thin with two different stories lines it never connects, has us believe a backward, pariah nation like North Korea is able to mount a coalition of all America's neighbors, sneak multiple nuclear warheads into the country ALL of them undetected then make the unfathnable deductions to detonate them at different time. The United States government barely responds to any of this. And these are just starters. If you like this kind of nonsense, you may like this. Otherwise. save you money.

In a wicked conspiracy reaching across the Mexican border, Tularosa pits a jaded ex-cop against tight-lipped Army personnel, hired thugs, and smooth-talking outlaws. Forced into retirement by a crippling gunshot wound, Santa Fe policeman Kevin Kerney seeks solitude on a small New Mexico ranch far from the nearest neighbor. Well crafted novel and, one imagines, just what the youth market is looking for. At least, its resemblance to 'The Hunger Games', 'Divergent'. the Maze Runner' can hardly be incidental.

In this Hugo-nominated novel, an alien walks into a museum and asks if he can see a paleontologist. But the arachnid ET hasn't come aboard a rowboat with the Pope and Stephen Hawking (although His Holiness does request an audience later). Landing at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, the spacefarer, Hollus, asks to compare notes on mass extinctions with resident dino-scientist Thomas Jericho.

Cheating for God
Revisado: 01-30-15
In modern times when most scientist are atheists, The author posits the ideal that alien scientists have come to the opposite conclusion. It's an interesting idea but are unlikely to change anyone's mind since the arguments don't change. To make its point"Calculating God" must create signs and wonders that are clearly products of the writers imagination. In my world that is called cooking the books. Part of the problem is that he must present science as theists and/or Creationists habitually misrepresent it. Again, not fair. at least, if we are trying to get at the truth. But then, maybe we're not, and it is a good read.

Historia
In the 25th century, humankind has spread throughout the galaxy, monitored by the watchful eye of the U.N. While divisions in race, religion, and class still exist, advances in technology have redefined life itself. Now, assuming one can afford the expensive procedure, a person's consciousness can be stored in a cortical stack at the base of the brain and easily downloaded into a new body (or "sleeve") making death nothing more than a minor blip on a screen.

OSS & EV
Revisado: 01-13-15
This book is a disappointment. In spite of a clever concept and a reasonably good plot, there are too many OSSs and EVs. The acronyms stand for Obligatory Sex Scene amend Excessive Violence especially when they exist only for themselves and their titallation and not that help drive the story line. In this case there were so many of them and they were so gratuatous that I found myself forgetting what the story was about. Perhaps editors, and publishers insist on this because they think it will sell more books. Maybe I don't have the stats but they hurt the quality of the bookand deprive me of a recommendation.

Historia
For too long, we've thought of fathers as little more than sources of authority and economic stability in the lives of their children. Yet cutting-edge studies drawing unexpected links between fathers and children are forcing us to reconsider our assumptions and ask new questions: What changes occur in men when they are "expecting"? Do fathers affect their children’s language development? What are the risks and rewards of being an older-than-average father at the time the child is born?

Must reading for Feminists
Revisado: 01-09-15
Fathers have taken a beating in recent years, not just from Feminists but from the media and from lazy writers of fiction. It's a bad rap. This book sets the record straight with a lot more than what level-headed people knew already. Research is confirming that fathers do make a difference. If we don't understand that, the difference will be negativem. If we do,it may be positive.

The death of Judd Foxman's father marks the first time that the entire Foxman family - including Judd's mother, brothers, and sister - have been together in years. Conspicuously absent: Judd's wife, Jen, whose 14-month affair with Judd's radio-shock-jock boss has recently become painfully public. Judd joins the rest of the Foxmans as they reluctantly submit to their patriarch's dying request: to spend the seven days following the funeral together.

Much ado about nihilism
Revisado: 01-05-15
This book had to be good, right? I mean a major motion picture, bestseller list, competent writer with an ear for striking metaphors; how could we go wrong?but In the end there is nothing. The characters go their dysfunctional ways, wallow in their disloyalties, practice their incompetencies; and learn, from all appearances, nothing.

Historia
This is a study of how intellectuals as a class affect modern societies by shaping the climate of opinion in which official policies develop, on issues ranging from economics to law to war and peace. You will hear a withering and clear-eyed critique about (but not for) intellectuals that explores their impact on public opinion, policy, and society at large.

Disguised right-wing screed
Revisado: 05-08-14
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Fox News addicts
Has Intellectuals and Society turned you off from other books in this genre?
No. It is not what it purports to be.
Any additional comments?
A very disappointing and misleading book. Without close examination, it looks like a serious study of the role of intellectuals. It isn't. It is a screed. First promoting various notions which have seized Right Wing America, then showing how, through history, the same impulse has destroyed just about everything it touches. There are interesting ideas in the book, but the interesting ones are old. Where ideas are new, they're tendentious or selective or straw men.

Historia
Academy Award nominee Samuel L. Jackson ( Pulp Fiction) rocks this mock bedtime story, capturing a hilarious range of emotions as the voice of a father struggling to get his child to sleep. Go the F**k to Sleep is a bedtime book for parents who live in the real world, where a few snoozing kitties and cutesy rhymes don’t always send a toddler sailing blissfully off to dreamland.

Overrated, overwrought, overdone, and overblown
Revisado: 03-29-13
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would not recommend this book to my friends, though I might consider recommending it to my enemies if I thought they would listen.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Infinite Jest, by David Wallace Foster
What about Samuel L. Jackson’s performance did you like?
Samuel Jackson was his usual competent self and you could feel him struggling to save a trifling rant, which is a distraction and not a good thing. Jackson gets five stars for performance, but if there were a category for judgment in material selection, it would be only one.
Do you think Go the F--k to Sleep needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
"Go the f**k to Sleep" is as good an argument as I've come across for censorship. So, no, no follow-up. Pleeeease.
Any additional comments?
After reading the reviews of "Go the f**k to Sleep", I may be stoned (in the Biblical sense) for absolutely hating it; but me, it did not engage and its language grossed me out.
