Historia
In April 1956, at the height of the Cold War, Khrushchev and Bulganin, leaders of the Soviet Union, are in Britain on an official visit. Chief Inspector Troy of Scotland Yard is assigned to be Khrushchev's bodyguard and to spy on him. Soon after, a Royal Navy diver is found dead and mutilated beyond recognition in Portsmouth Harbor. Troy embarks on an investigation that takes him to the rotten heart of MI6, to the distant days of his childhood, and into the dangerous arms of an old flame.

A terrific tale, brilliantly narrated.
Revisado: 02-08-22
A John Lawton novel is always a treat, but Lewis Hancock narrates this beautifully. His mastery of regional British accents is brilliant (Derbyshire, anyone?) and I really liked his pacing. I’ll be looking for more Lawtons and more Hancocks!! Enjoy!

A great tale, well read!
Revisado: 12-04-20
I love the Maisie Dobbs books, so I knew I would enjoy the story. But this reading of it was really excellent! Kim Hicks reads with spirit, and really captures the essence of the books. Her accents, especially r Cockney accent (e.g. Billy’s) are truly creditable. I’m English, and I often find myself, with audio books, listening for “gor blimey” in the narrators. Not here. Ms Hicks made the story seamless, making each character come to life. And her pacing was just right! I look forward to reliving more of Maisie’s adventures on Audible.

Historia
Jane Cleveland and Prudence Bates were close friends at Oxford University, but now live very different lives. Forty-one-year-old Jane lives in the country, is married to a vicar, has a daughter she adores, and lives a very proper life in a very proper English parish. Prudence, a year shy of 30, lives in London, has an office job, and is self-sufficient and fiercely independent - until Jane decides her friend should be married. Jane has the perfect husband in mind for her former pupil: a widower named Fabian Driver.

Strange accent
Revisado: 09-15-20
Miss Pym’s books are a joy! I was excited to listen to them on Audible. But ... Mary Sarah has the strangest English dialect. One I have never encountered. (I am English and attended drama school where we studied the regional dialects.) miss Sarah inserts a rhotic R after virtually every a. Such as thart for that, sard for sad, perharps for perhaps. It is very distracting. She also mispronounces common English place names such as Derbyshire in which the er is pronounced ar. I bought and stuck with all the available titles, but will not listen to any more titles recorded by this performer.

Such a disappointment
Revisado: 01-12-20
This is a wonderful, classic spy thriller, and I was excited to listen to it. But, oh dear! It is “semi-dramatized” with some of the worst voice-actors I have ever heard. The British accents, especially the Cockney and Scottish ones, are laughably bad, and the poor acting distracts from the terrific tale. (Dick Van Dyke could have done better!) I’ve listened to semi-dramatized books before and have thoroughly enjoyed them, but this is grating to the ear. The actual narrators are excellent, though, and the story itself is really compelling, which is why I have stuck with it.

Historia
Donald Cameron, a young Scotsman, is commissioned to write a book on the outsider's view of the English. He sets about his task with enthusiasm, encountering along the way an array of richly comical characters including civil servants, newspaper editors, minor poets, a glamourous movie star, politicians, and many more. This satire of English eccentricity has become a classic of 20th century literature.

Why abridge this book?
Revisado: 07-30-19
This is a wonderful story, wonderfully read by Martin Jarvis. But ... why abridge a book that’s only 186 pages in total? A. G. Macdonell wrote a nearly perfect short novel. The abridgment is ok, but knowing what’s missing greatly the pleasure.
