A simple DNA test is all it takes. Just a quick mouth swab, and soon, you'll be matched with your perfect partner - the one you're genetically made for. That's the promise made by Match Your DNA. A decade ago, the company announced that they had found the gene that pairs each of us with our soul mate. Since then, millions of people around the world have been matched. But the discovery has its downsides: Test results have led to the breakup of countless relationships and upended the traditional ideas of dating, romance, and love.

Revisado: 10-09-24
I can see that The One by John Marrs would attract an audience looking for a story about "genetic romance". The characters were not very interesting, though, and the story was just ok. It left me feeling a little let down. Not for me.

Perplexing romantic tale was a let-down
Revisado: 10-04-24
I had heard of Lucinda Riley only lately because of the popularity of her Seven Sisters series of books. So many people have been raving about that series. I live in France and a friend here who recently read the Seven Sisters books in French was as thrilled with Lucinda Riley as were English readers. Audible is offering The Girl on the Cliff for free with their Plus Catalog, so I thought I'd listen to one of her books to see what I think.
The Girl on the Cliff a good listen, but long and winding and complicated. Riley evokes beautiful imagery of Ireland and country life, but often I felt the author was twisting herself into a pretzel to make her characters find a happy ending. It went on and on.
I was frankly astounded when I found out at the end why the main character, Grania, left her lover and fled from New York to go back home to Ireland after her miscarriage. The author led us on through the whole novel, hinting that something truly terrible had happened to make Grania flee and refuse over and over to speak to her child's father, Matt. When the mystery was finally revealed, it was nothing at all. It turns out that our leading lady is a pretty shallow and silly woman.
I think Ms. Riley also needs to rethink the dialog she gives her American characters. Her Americans spoke as if they were living in the 1940s. I kept asking myself in what period this novel is set? The people have cell phones, but the way they talk is from a much earlier time. Finally, Grania's mother lets us know that she was 15 in 1970. So Grancia was born probably in the 1980s and the novel set in the early 2000s when Grania was a young woman. No American in the 2000s would use terms like "feeling blue" to describe sad. Matt, the American love interest, kept using "real good" in his descriptions and called Grania "baby" or used "aw baby" on and on. Matt is in his 30s and a lecturer at Columbia University. Give me a break! Dreadful and unrealistic dialog.
I was expecting so much more depth than this novel had to offer.

Narration destroys the book
Revisado: 07-18-24
I think I would have enjoyed this book if not for the narrator. Her voice was like nails on a chalkboard. Every time a male voice was needed it got even worse. Good grief, what a disaster! The only reason I listened all the way to the end is because the book is interesting. Never again, though, will I struggle through a book read by Shaina Summerville.

Paul’s just here to help, or so he claims—sent by a charity for vulnerable people to do odd jobs for elderly widow Gwen. But for Gwen’s daughter Connie, there’s just something about Paul that rings alarm bells from day one. He’s a little too kind, a little too involved…Worse still, Gwen seems to have fallen under his spell.

It's possible to have too many twists
Revisado: 07-04-24
I was battered by the time I finished this audio book. It started out in an interesting way, but by 1/3 in, I just wanted it to stop. Too contrived. Characters are strange. Gratuitous violence. When you think maybe things will be better, they get much worse--all the way to the end. I'm sorry I spent so much time listening. The narrations were fine, except for the voice of Meredith, which was truly painful to hear. I think this was my first and last John Marrs book.

“You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life—both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to digest.

More excellent stories told by the great SK
Revisado: 06-04-24
Thank you, Stephen King, for these truly memorable stories. I like the ones where you don't go into full gore, where your characters find themselves tangled up in unfortunate situations in the strangest of ways. The Answer Man was splendid; Rattlesnakes, less so for me--it was too creepy! Lol! On Slide Inn Road made me a nervous wreck. I was almost afraid to keep listening. (Flannery O'Connor, indeed!) Two Talented Bastids had me mesmerized. I couldn't wait for the book to come out and I was not disappointed. Will Patton is a treasure. I look for his narrations, and this one was superb. You really should let him read everything. Just sayin'.

Historia
It is 1873. Mrs. Eliza Touchet is the Scottish housekeeper—and cousin by marriage—of a once-famous novelist, now in decline, William Ainsworth, with whom she has lived for thirty years. Mrs. Touchet is a woman of many interests: literature, justice, abolitionism, class, her cousin, his wives, this life and the next. But she is also sceptical. She suspects her cousin of having no talent; his successful friend, Mr. Charles Dickens, of being a bully and a moralist; and England of being a land of facades, in which nothing is quite what it seems.

Interesting story, but I had trouble following it
Revisado: 05-21-24
Zadie Smith has taken on a complicated tale with many moving parts and characters. Her writing is superb, as are her insights on freedom and slavery. I had some trouble following the thread because of the way the book skips back and forth in time. And I had to listen to it twice to grasp it. Ms. Smith as a narrator has many good moments. Her sense of humor comes through well in passages. All in all, however, I would have preferred a professional narrator. I had trouble understanding Zadie Smith's voice and had to backtrack many times to relisten.

Good story, excellent characters, but … the ending…….
Revisado: 03-10-24
I enjoyed this book. I really enjoyed it up until the end. The descriptions of the ship and the characters are all compelling. The story foretells something strange and terrible. There is a huge build up. And then…I feel like the author couldn’t find the right ending, so left it to the reader. Disappointing.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Despite the terrible book cover & title-EXCELLENCE
Revisado: 03-11-23
I was desperately searching for a really good read. I often look at what The New York Times book reviews recommend and happened to run across this title. The title is uninspired and the book cover looks like a bad rom-com. But I read the review anyway and decided to take a chance. I'm glad I did. This is one of the truly best novels I have read in years. Its excellence will certainly overcome its unfortunate outward appearance. I applaud Bonnie Garmus! Her writing style, her story, her characters---ALL are amazing! I HOPE she will write more about her characters.
The narration in the audiobook format is also superb. Just one thing to point out: the mispronunciation of Jack LaLanne's name. I remember very well as a little girl seeing Jack Lalanne on television. He was an icon of early fitness shows. His name is pronounced LaLAnne (with a long "a"), not LaLanne (like "anne"). Every time the narrator said the name wrong, I cringed. Clearly the narrator had no idea who he was and didn't check. Why did the audio editor not catch this glaring mistake? Such a pity. The audio book could have been absolutely perfect.
