Historia
J. Robert Oppenheimer was one of the iconic figures of the 20th century, a brilliant physicist who led the effort to build the atomic bomb but later confronted the moral consequences of scientific progress. When he proposed international controls over atomic materials, opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb, and criticized plans for a nuclear war, his ideas were anathema to powerful advocates of a massive nuclear buildup during the anti-Communist hysteria of the early 1950s.

Great book, but the audio editing is terrible
Revisado: 10-24-24
This is a very detailed biography and the author did a great job weaving it into an interesting and captivating narrative.
The audio production of the audiobook is subpar. The volume frequently dips and all edits are obvious.

Historia
July 1346. Ten men land on the beaches of Normandy. They call themselves the Essex Dogs: an unruly platoon of archers and men-at-arms led by a battle-scarred captain whose best days are behind him. The fight for the throne of the largest kingdom in Western Europe has begun. Heading ever deeper into enemy territory toward Crécy, this band of brothers knows they are off to fight a battle that will forge nations, and shape the very fabric of human lives. But first they must survive a bloody war in which rules are abandoned and chivalry itself is slaughtered.

Just great! Just great. I don’t care how it ends. I am beyond impressed. I’m slightly further than halfway through and can’t put it down.

Historia
Forty-one-year Army veteran General (Ret.) Martin Dempsey and 41-year-old UC Berkeley associate professor Ori Brafman have been friends for almost 10 years. Though they have almost nothing in common, their collaboration has produced a powerful message. Their new book, Radical Inclusion, examines today’s leadership landscape and describes the change it demands of leaders. The nature of power is changing and should not be measured by degree of control alone.

Short. Worth reading. Not as good as No Time For Spectators
Revisado: 12-20-22
There are some good take aways, but I don’t think it feels like a complete work. Things seem a bit forced.

Historia
In 2014, northeastern Syria might have been the last place you would expect to find a revolution centered on women's rights. But that year, an all-female militia faced off against ISIS in a little town few had ever heard of: Kobani. By then, the Islamic State had swept across vast swaths of the country, taking town after town and spreading terror as the civil war burned all around it. From that unlikely showdown in Kobani emerged a fighting force that would wage war against ISIS across northern Syria alongside the United States.

I accidentally bought this via Amazon when trying to just add it to my list to consider… I decided to keep it and listen. I’m glad I did. It starts off slow, but builds to tell a complex backstory of the Kurds, ISIS, and the women who helped topple a global threat. I found it difficult to stop listening. I had never heard this story an I’m glad I know it now.

Historia
In March 1941 Jimmy Stewart, America's boy next door and recent Academy Award winner, left fame and fortune behind and joined the United States Army Air Corps to fulfill his family mission and serve his country. He rose from private to colonel and participated in 20 often-brutal World War II combat missions over Germany and France. In mere months the war took away his boyish looks as he faced near-death experiences and the loss of men under his command. The war finally won, he returned home with millions of other veterans to face an uncertain future.

A page turner, if a bit gossipy
Revisado: 03-17-21
The story and the performance were great. Some of the gossipy bits about the promiscuity in Hollywood in the 40s makes the listener check some of our legends about the propriety of the past, but the handling was a bit crass at times. The author also presents some dialog that must be inferred as the author says James Stewart didn’t talk about combat. All that aside, it was enjoyable and paints an interesting vignettes of an actor i new little about. He was definitely an American Hero.

Historia
Leonardo da Vinci created the two most famous paintings in history, The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. But in his own mind, he was just as much a man of science and engineering. With a passion that sometimes became obsessive, he pursued innovative studies of anatomy, fossils, birds, the heart, flying machines, botany, geology, and weaponry.

Very interesting, but so is the organization
Revisado: 12-23-20
Overall I enjoyed this book. Leonardo da Vinci is fascinating. The information contained in the book is well researched and paints a good portrait of the man. I do, however, have two minor criticisms. First, the book is not organized chronologically. This made it hard for me to understand how the person developed and grew over time. Instead it is generally organized by topic. Upon completion of the book I believe it was organized this way because Leonardo was so chaotic in his interest, it may have been hard to follow chronology. My second concern is the large number of speculations the author makes. He may be the writer, but he is not an expert. Perhaps the printed version had footnotes to support the speculations, but I found them the least interesting part of the book.
