Historia
Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

Maddening treacle
Revisado: 01-27-24
I don’t knock books because I know how hard it is to write a book. But goodness me, this one is a stinker! Poorly written, plot is preposterous (clearly involved mad dash to publication with minimal editing) and Olivia is maddening as a mother. The teen love story premise was intriguing but ultimately disappointing. I have avoided YA fiction in my adulthood and should have avoided this.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Historia
Vera Wong is a lonely little old lady—ah, lady of a certain age—who lives above her forgotten tea shop in the middle of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Despite living alone, Vera is not needy, oh no. She likes nothing more than sipping on a good cup of Wulong and doing some healthy detective work on the Internet about what her Gen-Z son is up to. Then one morning, Vera trudges downstairs to find a curious thing—a dead man in the middle of her tea shop.

Historia
The Latecomer follows the story of the wealthy, New York City-based Oppenheimer family, from the first meeting of parents Salo and Johanna, under tragic circumstances, to their triplets born during the early days of IVF. As children, the three siblings—Harrison, Lewyn, and Sally—feel no strong familial bond and cannot wait to go their separate ways, even as their father becomes more distanced and their mother more desperate. When the triplets leave for college, Johanna, faced with being truly alone, makes the decision to have a fourth child.

Hang in there
Revisado: 01-23-23
That’s my advice for readers. The Oppenheimer triplets and their family appear to have few redeeming qualities. As for hanging out with broken families, I got one of my own thanks so I wasn’t sure I would finish. But the writing is good, the characters are well flushed out and though the triplets are terrible, I found myself rooting for them. I was sooooo ready for the much light at the end of the tunnel.

Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have heard before.

I tired of the gaming backdrop, wrong generation it seems. Otherwise beautiful, painful tale of loss and pain. Triumph here is in waking up and trying it all again tomorrow……

Historia
It’s spring in the tiny town of Damariscotta, a tourist haven on the coast of Maine known for its oysters and antiques. Andrew, a high school English teacher recently returned to the area, has brought his family to Ed and Steph Thatch’s sprawling riverside estate to attend a reception for the Amherst women’s lacrosse team. Back when they were all teenagers, Andrew never could have predicted that Ed, descended from a long line of lobstermen, or Steph, a decent student until she dropped out to start a family, would ever send a daughter to a place like Amherst.

Hoping to get a flavor of mid coast Maine
Revisado: 06-11-22
I thoroughly appreciated the plot and in general the depiction of the fallen family. The Ivy League lacrosse playing narrator however lent primarily tedium to the story. When he shared his inner machinations, I found myself rolling my eyes and thinking how did this dude get 50% of the novel…… clearly the pages were not allocated based on merit. Why even bother to name Dartmouth, Amherst, Exeter etc. None of the narrators humanity came through, not the tension inherent in being a privileged orthopedic doctor’s kid given the most elite education available but who lived amongst working class families etc. instead his pages read like half hearted attempts at inserting himself into the story. Fortunately in the audio format, I could increase the speed of any of “his” chapters. I never did feel immersed into the setting, and that’s too bad as I was intrigued by the title and hoping to get a good picture of working class Midcoast Maine. I really liked the family however as those characters came alive to me and continue to live on in my head. For that, it was worth listening to.

Historia
Jillian Horton, a general internist, has no idea what to expect during her five-day retreat at Chapin Mill, a Zen centre in upstate New York. She just knows she desperately needs a break. At first she is deeply uncomfortable with the spartan accommodations, silent meals, and scheduled bonding sessions. But as the group struggles through awkward first encounters and guided meditations, something remarkable happens: World-class surgeons, psychiatrists, pediatricians and general practitioners open up and share stories about their secret guilt and grief.

This book is a blessing
Revisado: 02-13-22
It is so refreshing to hear about wellness in medicine from someone who is still in the arena getting her a$$ kicked everyday as she gives her heart to her patients, despite the commodification of both patient and provider that governs medicine in the 21st century in the US ( and apparently Canada). She has no path forward for the system and instead speaks directly to physicians with eloquence and wit. there wasn’t even a single paragraph that I found irritating….. a first for a book addressing physician wellness. Thank you and Bravo!!!!!
