Historia
The period covered in this book is well known for its epic battles and grand campaigns of territorial conquest, but Hellenistic monarchies, Carthaginians, and the rapacious Roman Republic were scarcely less active at sea. Huge resources were poured into maintaining fleets not only as symbols of prestige but as means of projecting real military power across the Mediterranean arena.

Not what I expected--Returned
Revisado: 03-03-23
Full disclose--I listened to the first chapter and decided that it wasn't worth my time and returned it. Here's why: The book immediately starts off with a history of the naval campaigns of Alexander the Great. However, the author doesn't give any background at all about ancient naval warfare, he just starts with the history. What's a trireme? What's a quinquereme? Why was it so important for ancient ships to stay relatively close to land? How did they fight? I know the answers but apparently the author didn't think it was worth discussing. While there is much we don't know about ancient warfare, we do know some things. I thought that this was going to be a deep dive (no pun intended) into ancient naval warfare but it seemed like it was going to be just a dry history.

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

If you're into water conservation, go for it!
Revisado: 01-22-23
If you're into dialogue, water conservation and a lot of references to drinking your own sweat (and other bodily fluids), pick this up. If not, I'd pass.
About all I knew about Dune was from the Iron Maiden song "To Tame a Land". Beyond that I had a general idea of the story but I never saw the movies. I backed the new Dune board game on Kickstarter so I decided to pick up the book on Audible.
To start, this is almost a 60 year old book at this point and it kind of shows. There is a lot of dialogue and not much action throughout most of the book. The combat consists mainly of single combat with knives and swords. There are also large sections of time where events happen that are just covered by a few sentences.
The reader is very good and at least fifty percent of the lines are voiced by real voice actors, who sound great. You would initially think that this would lead to an excellent experience, however, not all of the lines are voiced by the actors. This results in a weird combination where with female voices, the reader doesn't come close to the sound of the actress which takes you out of the experience. For the male actors, the reader sounds similar to the voice actor which gets confusing because you're not sure who it's supposed to be.
In the end, there is a little payoff in the final chapters but it's not worth the investment.

Historia
Struggling to reassert control over their Indochinese colonies after World War II, the French established a huge air-land base in the valley of Dien Bien Phu. But when the opposing Vietnamese People's Army (VPA) began massing its forces against the base in late 1953, French commanders seized the opportunity to draw their elusive enemy into a decisive set-piece battle. Defending a series of fortified positions which were reliant upon a single airstrip for reinforcement and resupply, the French troops quickly discovered that they had underestimated their enemy.

Decent compliment to a classic
Revisado: 11-09-22
If you are only going to read one book on Dien Bien Phu, read Hell in a very Small Place by Bernard Fall. For me, this is the definitive account of the battle. As far as Valley of the Shadow goes, it provides a nice compliment to Fall's classic. It provides much more detail on the Vietnamese side but in a dry way. With that said, the authors seem to go out of their way to point out a few errors in Hell in a very Small Place, almost to the point of gloating. Maybe Fall would have updated his account if he hadn't been killed in the same conflict some years later. In the end, this book makes for a good compliment to Hell in a very Small Place but it lacks the passion that Fall conveys and comes across as a documentary text instead of the epic that Fall created.
