Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

The performance was compelling The story just so so
Revisado: 11-22-24
I realize I may be in disagreement with many others but the story was a vehicle for testing science concepts. That was okay for a while but it's strayed into the implausible and while the ending was emotionally satisfying it was a huge stretch analytically. The idea that a civilization as fundamentally alien as the one portrayed would at the same time be so emotionally and psychosocialy similar strains credulity. The performance by Ray Porter was exceptional.

The cast was excellent, the writing was brisk and it ended well.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the entire series. The performers for the full cast audio were spot on. It was easy to visualize each one of them and their voices were so rich with character. I listen to all three books in about a week and consider it a week well spent.

Cringe Inducing (Not in a Good Way)
Revisado: 09-21-24
I tried to listen to it. I really really tried. I tried to work my way through every cliche from every television show or audiobook that I've listened to in the last 20 years. I thought in fact it might actually be a send-up of those old military sci-fi books with all the hypermasculine tropes and predictable plotting but I couldn't do it. Once to often the term "supercomputer implanted in his brain" was used. Even with a willing suspension of disbelief The juvenile word choice made me rip my teeth too much. I'm even okay with it being ear candy. something you don't have to concentrate on but the annoyance factor grew and grew and grew. I won't be finishing it. I tell you the same thing I would tell my friends. Don't start it!

Historia
In the world of Gnomon, citizens are constantly observed and democracy has reached a pinnacle of "transparency". Every action is seen, every word is recorded, and the System has access to its citizens' thoughts and memories - all in the name of providing the safest society in history. When suspected dissident Diana Hunter dies in government custody, it marks the first time a citizen has been killed during an interrogation. The System doesn't make mistakes, but something isn't right about the circumstances surrounding Hunter's death.

interesting and complex but ultimately a bit predictable
Revisado: 08-23-24
This was a very interesting and complex book layers upon layers upon layers. the concepts behind it were articulated or it will and there was an affection to keep the book moving and enough suspense to drive the narrative. It was almost brilliant. Almost but I suppose writing a review is a self-reflexive task because after all I am Gnomon!

I enjoyed the SF light aspect. Main characters are compelling. I expected a little more from this one in terms of development of the overarching plot. There was very little but there was a clear continuation from the last book.

fun but inconsistent
Revisado: 01-31-24
I enjoyed this book It kept me interested all the way through. thete were points at which it was really really difficult to suspend disbelief though and I felt kicked out of the world that he created. It reads like a contemporary satire with some science fiction elements stuck on it or it's a collision between a super secret agent hitches a ride on space opera.

Poorly written and ends poorly
Revisado: 01-31-21
This was a barely tolerable book at best. The author spends very little time on world building and far too much time creating a "plucky damsel in distress" that is overly impressed by a proffered handkerchief. The use of idiom is often jarring because it is very 21st century America. it would perhaps make a passable listen if not for the abrupt cliffhanger ending, intended I am sure to get you to buy other books. This book is short enough that the whole series could easily be contained in one. All in all a mild waste of time that ends on a annoying note.

Fascinating nuanced and character-driven
Revisado: 09-17-20
This book was far more nuanced fascinating and character-driven than one would expect for military sci-fi. I would go so far as to say this is actually the best military sci-fi book I have read/listened to in the last 10 years. The performer was excellent and brought each character to life and made them easy to differentiate. That is a rare talent. The only time I give a five out of five is when I wish the book wasn't over but it has actually come to a conclusion. somehow I missed this for the last 30 years glad to have come across it now. It holds up well.

hoped for more
Revisado: 01-21-20
the pacing was quite good. you can tell that it's been heavily influenced by the expanse. unfortunately the characters don't achieve the depth necessary to really care about them and they seem a bit stereotypical and contrived. what is the first book in a series it shows some promise but the ending is quiet unsatisfying. the narrator has a good voice however when he voices females it takes on a very wispry distracting quality.
