The "Real" Story Behind The Eagles

Baby Boom kids of the 70s who grew up with an endless supply of Eagles hits coming out of the AM radio speaker will enjoy this book. Up until hearing Felder's side of the story, most of my Eagles info came via mainstream music press and watching 'prepackaged' interviews on news shows like "60 Minutes." Felder's account takes you deep backstage from the band's birth to the Hell Freezes Over Tour to today. His level of detail is indicative of someone who was writing this material as it happened, rather than long after the experiences had occurred.

Those who have survived a bad business deal in life will come away from this book with a greater appreciation and respect for Felder who got royally screwed by the "Eagles Machine" headed by Frey, Henley and Irving Azoff. You'll also be able to relate to the similar stories of abused band members Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon. And then there's the demons that Joe Walsh faced up to and the role that Felder played in Walsh's recovery.

Indeed, this book does tarnish the carefully crafted public images of Frey & Henley because it presents them as cheats who were willing to strong-arm a fellow band member, in spite of what was in a written contract. But from my perspective, the real villain of this story is Azoff, who clearly was in the game to win at any expense. He was an enabler and even co-conspirator of Frey & Henley's 'power grab' in a band that was supposed to be "equal shares for all." As Henley quipped regarding Azoff, "He may be Satan....but he's OUR Satan."

I'm about half-way through this book on Audible. Although very basic, this is a good overview of the power of Google, Facebook & Twitter. Run the audio at 1.2x Speed or you'll grow a little impatient with the slow delivery of the narrator.

Narrator suggestion: Turn down the compression. Audio is way too breathy. Your settings are great for a 30 second spot on radio....but too 'hot' for a six-hour production.

After finishing Matt Miller in the Colonies, Book 1 last week, I couldn't wait to learn the 'rest of the story.' I consumed Book 2 over the weekend and loved every second of the audio book.

The introduction of Benjamin Franklin into the plot was surprising and effective. And the continued development of the lives of other time travelers opens up many possibilities for Book 3.

Congratulations to Mark for another outstanding story. I'll be among the first listeners to the next installment. And, based on Franklin's letter at the end of the book, things are getting very interesting in England!

I've Read Lewis...This is Disappointing

I think I've read just about every Michael Lewis book published. I thought his work regarding the financial world was especially good and I've recommended his books to many people through the years.

The Fifth Risk was a huge disappointment. I couldn't even get past the first couple of chapters because it immediately struck me as just another 'hit job' on Trump. And the content I did listen to didn't strike me as anything I hadn't heard already or couldn't get by tuning into CNN for an hour.

Wow. This was an outstanding listen. Congrats to Mark for a very interesting time travel adventure. Having had to survive a number of ill-advised author narrations through the years, I was impressed with Mark's performance.

I've just started "Book Two" and am hopeful that this author gets busy on some additional Matt Miller adventures.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Very logically constructed and presented, this is one of the best audio books I've listened to in several years.

What other book might you compare Dr. Mary's Monkey to and why?

It's on the same level with Mark Lane, Gaeton Fonzi and Peter Janney.

Which scene was your favorite?

I found Haslam's writing about New Orleans in the 50s and 60s to be very interesting. It left me wanting to learn more about this city and the influence it had on our nation during this time.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

This one was hard to put down. It kept me captivated on a recent long distance road trip.

Any additional comments?

I thought JIm Meskimen did a good job reading the book.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Overall, an interesting and informative book. However, it seems like the author repeated several themes....especially the theme of the SS being under-funded. An interesting book and a good 'behind-the-scenes' look into how politicians really act when nobody's looking.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Not sure.

What three words best describe Michael Bybee’s performance?

Easy. Smooth. Unoffensive.

Did The First Family Detail inspire you to do anything?

Vote independent.

Any additional comments?

Overall a very good read. I respect the author for exposing bad behavior from presidents of both parties. Seems even-handed in that regard. The information on Joe Biden's travel costs is very concerning. I'm motivated to learn more about this.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, "Creature" is the story of world history but tied to the trail of money. Even though the actual book is a bit intimidating in length, the audio book is easy to digest and read very well. This is, hands down, the best audio book I've ever listened to. Additionally, the book has forever changed the way I look at banking and my country.

What did you like best about this story?

Griffin's ability to explain both the macro and micro without losing the reader.

Have you listened to any of Mark Bramhall’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

He's one of the best narrators in the field. His delivery is surprisingly close to Griffin's.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. 24 hours in one sitting wouldn't be possible.

Any additional comments?

Anyone who wants to truly understand the issues that America faces needs to read or listen to this book. Now that I've listened to "Creature" on Audible, I'm going back to the book version to read the footnotes.
