Historia
Victorian London is a cesspool of crime, and Scotland Yard has only 12 detectives - known as “The Murder Squad” - to investigate thousands of murders every month. Created after the Metropolitan Police’s spectacular failure to capture Jack the Ripper, The Murder Squad suffers rampant public contempt. They have failed their citizens. When Walter Day, the squad’s newest hire, is assigned the case of the murdered detective, he finds a strange ally in the Yard’s first forensic pathologist, Dr. Bernard Kingsley.

Bad Narration but decent story
Revisado: 11-21-23
It is difficult to rate a book that is so poorly read. I think the story itself is a good one, despite the odd structure. I have continued to listen at night because the narrator puts me to sleep.

Insight into aging
Revisado: 09-23-23
I am 78 and my husband is 79. I am still an an academic but we are beginning to experience dementia and it’s sorrows together. This wonderful series is a respectful understanding of what it means to age.

Historia
1468. A young priest, Christopher Fairfax, arrives in a remote Exmoor village to conduct the funeral of his predecessor. The land around is strewn with ancient artifacts - coins, fragments of glass, human bones - which the old parson used to collect. Did his obsession with the past lead to his death? Fairfax becomes determined to discover the truth. Over the course of the next six days, everything he believes - about himself, his faith, and the history of his world - will be tested to destruction.

What a mess
Revisado: 06-01-23
If an author is going to write an historical novel, they are required to be accurate about the details. This book, set in 1438, as I recall, mentions plastic items. There were other discrepancies but that is when I stopped listening.

Narration killed this book for me.
Revisado: 11-25-22
The publishers should have hired an actor to narrate. The author's reading of her own book is monotonous to say the least.

Detective Harry Grimm deserves better writing
Revisado: 10-24-22
I read Book 1 of this series and enjoyed it, believing that the second book would be even better. Not the case. It is very odd to me that someone could write such a fascinating character as Harry Grimm and then allow the writing about him to be so pedestrian. The book needed a real editor.

Historia
1450s France. A young Englishman, Tom Swan, is kneeling in the dirt, waiting to be killed by the French who have taken him captive. He's not a professional soldier. He's really a merchant and a scholar looking for remnants of ancient Greece and Rome - temples, graves, pottery, fabulous animals, unicorn horns. But he also has a real talent for ending up in the midst of violence when he didn't mean to.

Psychotherapy in the Roman Army
Revisado: 02-04-21
I love Roman military fiction, give me a bone-crushing battle and I am happy. However, I returned this book because so many of the conversations between characters sounded like new-age therapy sessions. I just couldn't buy into Roman Legionaries talking about their feelings.

Historia
London, June 1860: When an assassination attempt is made on Queen Victoria, and a petty thief is gruesomely murdered moments later - and only a block away - Chief Detective Inspector Charles Field quickly surmises that these crimes are connected to an even more sinister plot. Was Victoria really the assassin's target? Are those closest to the Crown hiding something? Soon, Field's investigation exposes a shocking conspiracy in which the publication of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species sets off a string of murders, arson, kidnapping, and the pursuit of a diabolical madman.

Too Much Villain
Revisado: 10-06-19
I enjoyed this book, but the villain was over the top. For me, there was no mystery, and I prefer a mystery where I can't tell who did the deed until the end. It kept my interest because of the discussion of the political and sociological ramifications of Darwin's work.

Historia
At the end of The Winter, King Arthur fought the battle that forces unity on the warring British kingdoms and now he sets out to face the real enemy - the English (it is one of the great ironies of the Arthur stories that he should have become an English hero when, if he existed at all, he was a great war-leader who opposed the invading Sais). First, though, Merlin leads a perilous expedition into the mysterious west to retrieve a cauldron, one of the treasures of Britain.

Cornwell and Keeble are WONDERFUL
Revisado: 07-13-19
Bernard Cornwell is such a wonderful writer that he spoils other writers of historical fiction for me. Of course, King Arthur is not exactly historical, but Cornwell's description of warcraft and customs in England is so clear and well researched that the fictional parts of the story feel true. Jonathan Keeble is equal to the demands of Cornwell's books. He is a remarkable actor.
