Sobering Soldiering

An informative and sobering inside look at our military post WW2 until late 20th Century by a soldier who genuinely cared for the men under his command. It is a reminder of how leadership at every level is stellar or pitiful with variations in between. The picture painted is how people can achieve the level expected of them with proper mentoring and leadership by example. This holds true for children through seasoned citizens (mostly).

Big week, big sacrifices

Tiresome

I grew tired of the main character and his escapades. The narrator’s voices didn’t appeal to me and were a distraction to the storyline. Last listen in this series for me.

Hardships and Hope

A testament to the human spirit and the will to persevere in spite of horrible circumstances and conditions. It is also a reminder of atrocities that have occurred in the past and likely still exist in current times. This was sobering but also uplifting.

Classic Adventure

This is an example of how humanity can overcome circumstances when of like mind and when respect for abilities of each person is acknowledged and welcomed. Perseverance and tenacity can change an outcome. The narrator’s whistling of any word with s is the only negative in this audiobook.

A Journal, Not a Story

If you are interested in the life of this man, these journal entries provide some insight into his beliefs, thoughts and life experiences. It is a plodding but rewarding venture. John Wesley’s impact on both sides of the pond has been instrumental in many people of the Christian faith. If only I had his discipline.

Reality Behind The Facade

Every person has a real story behind their facade. Glamour, fame and public perceptions are usually not real and it occurs in each of us. This is a refreshing story of reality as told by someone famous, a cue for each of us. Putting our real person forward is risky, invites criticism and rejection; however it frees us to be ourselves and might be the spark that drives others to be free of their facade. I enjoyed this.

Small Town Life Remembered

Although my adventures growing up were not as dramatic, this story caused me to remember and appreciate my early life in a simpler time. McCammon paints a moving picture of family, friends and all the good and bad elements of life while growing up. The narration was well done and I thoroughly enjoyed this listen. I recommend this title.

Broken

We live in a world of broken people. One never knows the pain a person is experiencing in relationships or life and apparent success can mask the underlying conflicts and pains that are present in everyone. JT lays out his life clearly, not ignoring those conflicts and pains. And interesting listen but his songs speak the most about his life. As a result, I will hear them differently.

Excellent all around

Not only is the story wonderful, the narration brought the characters to life. The 2010 movie came fairly close to the story, but doesn’t come close to the spoken text. This is worth the time.
