What a privilege to hear the man himself talk about his work
Revisado: 05-06-24
When I first heard Caro’s voice narrating his book, my heart sank a little. He’s clearly getting on and speaks quite slowly and deliberately. But after only five minutes or so I wouldn’t have wanted to listen to anyone else reading it. It’s really like having him sitting in an armchair talking to you. His extremely thorough and idiosyncratic approach to researching and writing are really interesting.

These modern dispatches from an ancient landscape tell the story of a deep-rooted attachment to place, describing a way of life that is little noticed and yet has profoundly shaped this landscape. In evocative and lucid prose, James Rebanks takes us through a shepherd's year, offering a unique account of rural life and a fundamental connection with the land that most of us have lost.

Informative and well-written but flawed
Revisado: 07-02-23
Rebanks appears to make the transition from chippy, inward looking Lakeland farmer to something a bit bigger and this is an interesting story. As is all the information about the life of the Lakeland sheep farmer. But there are no clues as to how he makes the transition, nor the factors that cause it.

Great story, wonderfully narrated
Revisado: 06-20-23
Beautifully crafted story of an ordinary life. I felt uplifted. Narration by Simon McBurney catches the mood of the story just right.

Comprehensive but flawed
Revisado: 10-25-15
Would you try another book from The Great Courses and/or Professor Richard Baum?
This is a comprehensive account of China's history. For people interested in China's rise and its implications for the rest of the world, it offers valuable insights. Professor Baum's long relationship with the country and its people, plus his ability to weave vignettes of his many experiences in China make the lectures more vivid. He also delivers the messages in a compelling way which attracts the attention of listeners. But although he asks all the right questions about all the many atrocities committed by the Chinese Communist Party, and particularly under Mao's rule, his conclusions are way too optimistic and benign. Mao was responsible for the death of tens of millions of people but wasn't a bad guy. He wrote sweet poems to his wife, we are told. We have every reason to be concerned about China's aggressive diplomatic and military behavior and its suppression of opposition at home. But listening to Professor Baum's lectures, you wonder what all the fuss is about.

Good book, shame about the narrator
Revisado: 05-31-15
What did you like best about The Culture Map? What did you like least?
Although the book makes interesting and useful points about cross cultural communication, it shares with all books of this type the problem of making gross generalizations about national culture with no attempt at any health warning. But the worst thing about this production is the narrator, who makes truly awful attempts at different accents. As there is a considerable amount of dialogue, this is really offputting. The appalling 'Charlie Chan' oriental accents are the low point of all the audible books I have ever listened to. Avoid this recording and read the book.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Karen Saltus?
NO. She is the worst I have ever experienced.
