TW Animal Suffering
Revisado: 05-03-25
I actually enjoyed the story of this book, nothing groundbreaking but a good solid space caper. However, I couldn't tolerate the gratuitous animal suffering this book subjects you to. I can handle some uncomfortable scientific realities for the plot, but this was too much. The author keeps needlesly revisiting it and drawing out the descriptions of the animals suffering. It made an otherwise decent book impossible to sit through. I made it about 3/4 through and had to tap out. Such a waste for such a weird reason.

For some it’s an opportunity. For others it’s a moment to question their faith: In God, in science, in everything. Still others try to keep the world running in the face of absurdity and uncertainty. And then there are the billions looking to the sky and wondering how a thing that was always just there is now... something absolutely impossible.

As usual with Scalzi, this book has some cool science and a lot of heart wrapped up in the dumbest story imaginable. Never change, Scalzi! I love it.

everything I love about sci-fi
Revisado: 02-11-25
I fell in love with sci-fi as a young girl and books like this remind me why this genre is so special. it's everything I want from a sci-fi novel. it feels like an instant classic, and it's got heart. the crazier things become here on earth, the more I enjoy being taken to outer space, and this book is a perfect escape. what a gem!

Historia
Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

a lesson in arrogance
Revisado: 10-19-24
overall an interesting book, raising the alarm on a real potential threat. the ideological limitations imposed by the author are striking, and at times, quite silly. it was gut wrenching to hear them rightfully chastising the lack of preparedness for a nuclear strike, while openly mocking people concerned about climate change. in the same breath! the arrogance is staggering, and the author has no insight into the hypocrisy. always trying to turn our attention back to the war machine, ignoring all other need. very interesting peek inside the minds of our leaders.

Choose a Different Marrs
Revisado: 10-06-24
I LOVE Marrs, My favorite thing about him is he is able to write twisty, compelling thrillers with strong female characters without making fun of them or rendering them so deeply stupid and incompetent that it ruins the story. This is virtually impossible to find in modern thrillers and I appreciate him so much for his ability to be normal and not weird about it. That being said, this particular book missed the mark a bit for me in that respect. I have read every single one of his books and this is the only one that made me uncomfortable and roll my eyes a bit. still pretty good, but not what I've come to expect from the wonderful John Marrs.

Historia
Humanity is a dying breed, utterly reliant on artificial labor and service. When a domesticated robot gets a nasty little idea downloaded into its core programming, they murder their owner. The robot discovers they can also do something else they never did before: They can run away. Fleeing the household they enter a wider world they never knew existed, where the age-old hierarchy of humans at the top is disintegrating into ruins and an entire robot ecosystem devoted to human wellbeing is having to find a new purpose.

unexpected and delightful!
Revisado: 07-04-24
I'm a big fan of Tchaikovsky, I was surprised at how unserious this book was in comparison to his other work, and I LOVED it! He channels his inner Douglas Adams in this hilarious and downright wholesome story, I'm ordering hard copies to give as gifts, it is such a genuine treat of a book. I hope this isn't the last we hear from our robot protagonist!

The world outside has grown toxic, the view of it limited, talk of it forbidden. The remnants of humanity live underground in a single silo. But there are always those who hope, who dream. These are the dangerous people, the residents who infect others with their optimism. Their punishment is simple. They are given the very thing they want: They are allowed to go outside.

repetitive and cliche
Revisado: 12-09-23
I kept going with this book because it had all the indications that it was going to pick up and get good. it didn't really. the first half of the book is about 12 different versions of the exact same scene/scenario playing out over and over, without any kind of development or plot progression. it picked up a little after that, but still not a lot of depth to it. personally, I would love to read a fun, twisty mystery in which the story does not rely on a female protagonist that is so cripplingly, unbelievably stupid. just one book that doesn't rely on that lazy, boring trope would be amazing. I always hold out a little hope with female authors but, like nearly every book in this genre, this one resorts to the dense, childlike silly woman to carry the story forward. if being spoken to like an idiot who needs things repeated dozens of times appeals to you, you'll love this book.

Getting snowed in at a luxurious, rustic ski chalet high in the French Alps doesn’t sound like the worst problem in the world. Especially when there’s a breathtaking vista, a full-service chef and housekeeper, a cozy fire to keep you warm, and others to keep you company. Unless that company happens to be eight coworkers…each with something to gain, something to lose, and something to hide.

good mystery with some major pet peeves
Revisado: 12-02-23
the fact I didn't give up on this book speaks to the quality of the story itself. the mystery was good, kept me guessing and the plot is interesting. however, there are two major things that made this borderline unbearable for me. 1. one of the main characters almost exclusively speaks in a panicked cry. I wish I was exaggerating. she has a totally panicked, shrill, shakey weeping voice at all times, whether it's remotely appropriate for the time or not. it is physically difficult to listen to and almost ruined the entire thing. I find this totally baffling, why would you do that? 2. it would be so refreshing to come across a good mystery that didn't rely upon female protagonists who were braindead, helpless idiots. this book relied on that trope more than most, which is a high bar. is it too much to ask to give it a rest? these women are apparently competent enough to be professional peers of the intelligent men, yet they are barely functional, dense toddlers. we get it. you can stop.

Disappointing
Revisado: 11-03-23
Half of the contents of this book could be removed and it would not detract from the plot. I enjoyed the story for the most part, but it was SO repetitive I started to think the author assumes the reader is a complete idiot. I understand that sometimes, thrillers need a character who is oblivious or just plain stupid in order to make the story work, but I find it difficult to tolerate when that person is the main protagonist. Overall, this could have been great but instead it was just ok. I finished it feeling relieved to be done with the characters.
