This book definitely had me talking to family and friends as I listened along. Only a good book can do this. This would be a great book for bookclubs too.

Running two stories with similar names is very confusing. My frustration level was too high throughout the story. At the end of the book it’s very sweet.

I thought the story was delightful and informative. I also enjoyed the church hymns. Thank you Lois.

Read this book for bookclub. It appears it was well received with the group.

The prologue started with an attack by native Americans, killing several travelers and kidnapping two others. I expect the next chapter to be about their new life OR people on the trail notice they are dead or missing, only to have chapter one start months earlier and it’s take 2/3’s of the book before we are back to where the prologue was.

I also thought at times the story dragged. He loves me, now he doesn’t, now he does again, and so on. Was there nothing else to do on this trail? Maybe pick up Buffalo chips? Some sights to see? Bodies to bury?

As my daughter said, will I pick this book up again and read it again, no. It had its entertaining points, but ran long at points.

I’m exhausted !!! Nothing like reading a book backwards. I think the editors should have told the author to re-think her entire set up. There were times when I read a portion that was a clue, or should be a clue or maybe is not even a clue at all and wonder what the fudge did I miss?! When was this discussed in the book among the millions of characters who may or may not be important to the story.

There should be a warning that this book requires to be read several times.

Now if I enjoyed it like the Night Circus, I’ll be happy to read it again. This book I’m happy I didn’t spend a dime on!

BRAVO!!

I needed a circus themed book this month and imagine my surprise that Jim Dale was narrating the story!!!! I love his work.

I wanted to run off and join the circus with these characters by the end of Part I.

This is definitely not a children’s novel and was happy the author kept the intimate parts PG.

I’m just sorry it took me years to listen to this novel. I’m going to suggest it (strongly) to family & friends. 🤡

I remember reading this book over 10 yrs ago. I don’t remember much about it.

I truly believe I enjoyed it more the second time around. Maybe because I had more time to read in one sitting, maybe because I’m older. Whatever the reason it’s a wonderful story to read this time of year.

I like to think that this “impossible society” in China doesn’t exist. That throwing a young couple out due to a miscarriage, twin birth or birth defect may cause bad things happen in the future to the community they live in. The outcast was later shown to be next to death, living in the woods in a different country. Li-an was kind enough to find this poor girl again and give a second chance at life. This is a really the true story.

Ms Lee is showing us how Li-an is also given a second chance at life. How some other villagers do well with their second chance and others do not.

I enjoyed the novel and recommended it.

This book was definitely in my wheelhouse as I read it in two days. Problem was it was a book club selection set for mid-September. So I read it again in September along with all the footnotes. I loved the book.

Now in book club the ladies didn’t finish it, felt confused by each ladies story beginning and ending and starting up again. ( I understood the author was following each ladies in order of date of occurrence). The book club ladies gave the book ⭐️⭐️⭐️. (disappointing!)

Too Bohemian for the 1940’s

An older woman, Vivian is asked by a dear friend’s daughter as to how she met her father. The story goes back to the 1940’s when 17 yr old Vivian quit college and her parents invited to to leave home to get life experience from Aunt Peg. Aunt Peg lived in a rundown active theatre called, The Lily Playhouse. The building held the theatre, 2nd for office, living apartments on 3 & 4th floor. Aunt Peg allowed almost anyone and everyone to come live with them and to Vivian this was marvellous. The story of course takes places over 60 years. It has its funny parts and slap in the face parts. Even as a grown woman Vivian had to be reminded “The field of honor is a painful field.” A lesson many still need to be taught.

I thought for a well bred girl of the 1930’s to change her lifestyle over night to a loose woman was a bit unbelievable. Her brother’s reaction to her lifestyle was more in tune to want was expected.
