Interesting period piece with great narration
Revisado: 02-22-25
The narration is fabulous, as are the characters. I love the Useful Women aspect of this series, as well as the strong female characters who are empowered and independent in an era where that was hard to achieve. The mystery had an obvious solution that I can't believe that Mabel overlooked when assessing what evidence she had and had not collected. I think she's smarter than that--and needs less damsel in distress moments--so I hope that shifts a bit in the next installment in the series.

Good but not as good as Meg and Jo
Revisado: 07-20-23
I truly enjoyed both of these books, but Meg and Jo spoke to me more both because of the issues the sisters faced, their relationship, and the retelling of the original story. So much of this book went off script, in part of course because Beth is alive. Some readers/listeners may appreciate that, but I didn't find her character very true to the original. I would not recommend listening to it right after Meg and Jo because the voices the narrators use for Jo and Bauer are dreadful, especially in Amy's sections, and it was just painful after the great narration of that book. Otherwise the narration, especially for the mom, was good.

The worst of this series
Revisado: 02-03-23
I have really enjoyed this series – – until this book. Too much discussion of sexual violence against 12 and 14 year olds and a not as likable heroine in the past story. The present story is not as compelling as in the other books, either, in part because of too many lectures and excess sermonizing about indie publishing. Really hoping that the next in the series is back to form or that will be the end of the series for me.

Historia
Manhattan, 1850. Born out of wedlock to a wealthy socialite and a nameless immigrant, Cora Lee can mingle with the rich just as easily as she can slip unnoticed into the slums and graveyards of the city. As the only female resurrectionist in New York, she’s carved out a niche procuring bodies afflicted with the strangest of anomalies. Anatomists will pay exorbitant sums for such specimens—dissecting and displaying them for the eager public. Cora’s specialty is not only profitable, it’s a means to keep a finger on the pulse of those searching for her. She’s the girl born with two hearts....

Good story until it became over the top (3.5)

Started out strong with interesting historical information, but the story became ludicrous near the end. Great narrator.

Everyone from Wakarusa, Indiana, remembers the infamous case of January Jacobs, who was discovered in a ditch hours after her family awoke to find her gone. Margot Davies was six at the time, the same age as January—and they were next-door neighbors. In the twenty years since, Margot has grown up, moved away, and become a big-city journalist. But she’s always been haunted by the feeling that it could’ve been her. And the worst part is, January’s killer has never been brought to justice.

This started out great, but it increasingly became preposterous in the second half and the ending was terrible.

Historia
Isabel accepts an invitation to serve on the advisory committee of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery but soon finds herself swept up in an all-too-familiar dilemma. David is the grandson of a Scottish clan chief and is supportive of Scottish nationalism. Underdeveloped
Revisado: 08-14-22
I generally love this series, but this book feels like it’s half a book. So many plot threads that nothing was ever done with, and many storylines just feel undeveloped and unresolved. A disappointing story.
