This book took awhile for me to get into but I now have read it twice and became enthralled by her insights about writing, finding a language and what grabs you in a book. Mothering Sunday grabbed me

serious bookclub reading
Revisado: 08-16-16
I loved this book once the focus shifted from Anna and her chronic wow is me. In part my interest was intense because the questions Tolstoy asked of most of his characters were serious, thoughtful ones. I got tired of Anna and more and more taken with the others, particularly Levin

Historia
With more than two million copies of her novels sold, New York Times best-selling author Geraldine Brooks has achieved both popular and critical acclaim. Now, Brooks takes on one of literature's richest and most enigmatic figures: a man who shimmers between history and legend. Peeling away the myth to bring David to life in Second Iron Age Israel, Brooks traces the arc of his journey from obscurity to fame, from shepherd to soldier, from hero to traitor, from beloved king to murderous despot and into his remorseful and diminished dotage.

A book well worth the adventure it describes
Revisado: 01-31-16
In the early section of this book I found it slow going. But when I got to know the man people I became glued to it. I soon found it difficult to put down . brooks choice to focus on a turbulent period in middle Eastern history which at times is bloody and at others shows a growing progressive state building I would strongly recommend it!

Characters who become people
Revisado: 12-05-15
While in my spare time, mysteries are a pleasure I hope for. Few are as well written as the ganache series. Louise Penny manages to create a small town populated by people with distinction and individual voices. In addition you come to know the traits of the investigative team and its leader. I strongly recommend this series

Suspenseful novel that gains power
Revisado: 09-01-15
When I started this book I enjoyed the exotic setting but found the story slow going. Before too long the characters took on lives, particularly the detectives. By them I was committed to the book and had to find out what happened...who did it! I was surprised at the ending!

English anthropologist Andrew Bankson has been alone in the field for several years, studying the Kiona river tribe in the territory of New Guinea. Haunted by the memory of his brothers' deaths and increasingly frustrated and isolated by his research, Bankson is on the verge of suicide when a chance encounter with colleagues, the controversial Nell Stone and her wry and mercurial Australian husband, Fen, pulls him back from the brink. Nell and Fen have just fled the bloodthirsty Mumbanyo and, in spite of Nell's poor health, are hungry for a new discovery.

Compelling and competitive fieldwork
Revisado: 08-26-15
I picked this book since it was chosen by my book club. I loved it and before long it was a page turner. The three major characters are beautifully drawn. The details of their fieldwork and their different approaches was fascinating. Also the settings of the distinctive tribal communities was an extraordinary background for a love story of three strong personalities

Moments in history
Revisado: 08-27-14
This is a compelling, action packed book which highlights moments in history that stand as individual stories in their own right but are connected through their transatlantic history. Starting with the first plane flight from Canada to Ireland and concluding with George Mitchell and his work on the Irish peace process it is well written and fascinating.

Smart page turner
Revisado: 07-18-13
I downloaded this book because of the buzz and stayed because I literally couldn't put it down. First of all, I cared about the main characters...they were complex, interesting and not the least bit cliched. Strike, the main character has a fascinating history and an equally interesting present. Others are likewise intriguing. I wanted to sit down with them, have a good dinner and knew I would be assured of good conversation. The plot is sophisticated and the process of moving through the puzzle is drawn in great detail.
I also thought the descriptions of place and people were very well done.
The narration was excellent.

Revisado: 02-07-13
The most frustrating thing about this book was it's jumping from one topic to another and one group of Indians to another. The author would also make generalizations on the one hand and then pepper the listener with facts some of which were confusing and poorly connected to the topic.
There was no story line to speak of.
There was also no balance in the presentation. I am convinced that many groups made significant contributions to in a number of ways. However, there were also groups who were not contributors.
Overall I was disappointed in this book and would not recommend it.
