Such a pleasurable retelling of a favorite classic

I never get tired of Jane Austen’s Emma and the various retellings of this classic story, whether word for word or updated like Clueless, and this did not disappoint. Utterly charming, fun and terrifically narrated by Emma Thompson. The performances were delightful and brought all the engagingly flawed characters to life. The sound design was a little loud at times but not so much as to distract from the enjoyment. I hope to see more like this in future Audible originals.

The performance made this book so difficult to listen to. While the characters speaking were speaking, it was fine. However, the exposition and “he said” “she said” were done with such harsh intonation it was jarring and pulled me right out of the story. Especially when there were multiple speakers being identified. I almost returned this book, but stuck it out because I liked the main characters from the previous Sandhamn book. Unfortunately, I can’t recommend this one unless you get it for a massive discount. They really need to re-record the narration.
