Historia
Cole Riker is a Slip Runner. A contractor tasked with finding alien salvage in exchange for credits. For an ex-smuggler like Cole, there’s a catch: Don’t break the terms of parole. That means doing things by the book. Find salvage, turn it in, get paid. But everything changes when a retrieval mission lands him in a previously unknown sector. There, he finds the material he’s been sent to recover, along with something more. A brand-new form of ancient alien life.

Not a deep story or work of classic literature, but thoroughly enjoyable. I'm hooked, and can't wait to start the second book.

Historia
In the early morning of June 1, 1921, a White mob marched across the train tracks in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and into its predominantly Black Greenwood District - a thriving, affluent neighborhood known as America's Black Wall Street. They brought with them firearms, gasoline, and explosives. In a few short hours, they'd razed 35 square blocks to the ground, leaving hundreds dead. The Tulsa Race Massacre is one of the most devastating acts of racial violence in US history. But how did it come to pass?

Historia
The Kalevala is the signature work of traditional Finnish culture. In story after story, it explores the human and divine world as understood by the traditional runic singers of the north. It sings of how the universe came to be, how the natural world works, how divine and supernatural worlds relate to the world of humankind, how human beings relate to each other, how good and evil and life and death function in the world.

a handful of points where the reader had to restart a sentence that could have been edited out. still, pretty amazing.

Enter the fantastical world of Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast Trilogy, one of the undisputed fantasy classics of all time. Novelist C.S. Lewis called Peake's books "actual additions to life; they give, like certain rare dreams, sensations we never had before, and enlarge our conception of the range of possible experience."

needs editing
Revisado: 08-12-21
A masterwork of British literature. My sole complaint was the editing, as there are, frequently, repeated paragraphs that pepper the recording. Presumably, these were breaks in a radio broadcast. They need to be cut out for a smoother listen.

At first, only a few things are known about the celestial object that astronomers dub Rama. It is huge, weighing more than ten trillion tons. And it is hurtling through the solar system at inconceivable speed. Then a space probe confirms the unthinkable: Rama is no natural object. It is, incredibly, an interstellar spacecraft. Space explorers and planet-bound scientists alike prepare for mankind's first encounter with alien intelligence.

SIRI has more inflection.
Revisado: 07-26-17
The story was good, well written. The narrator was bearable played at 1.5x speed, and does a credible north-ender Aussie accent. Played at normal speed, it was like listening to a stoned Vulcan.

Good story, terrible reader.
Revisado: 10-14-16
The setting and characters were well done. The reader was monotonous, and a variety of nonverbal mouth noises made it through the editing process. Inhalations, sighs, lip-smacks, tongue clicks make for a very amateur performance. No effort was made to differentiate one character's voice from another.

Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

Wonderful, in every sense of the word.
Revisado: 02-09-15
If this weren't a first novel, this book would be incredible. Well researched, meticulous in detail, masterful storytelling and characterization. It's rare I read something that transports me like this book did. Absolutely brilliant; I am in mourning for the world set out here, now that I have finished.
The narration and voicework by George Guidall brought this incredible book to life.
