Misogynistic

The writer/narrator comes across as very misogynistic, attacking Martha with low blows mostly directed at her looks and intelligence. He literally blames her for ruining her parents’ lives by simply being born, forcing them into an unwanted marriage. He constantly makes remarks about her legs and her face and clearly has a deep sexual attraction toward her which also comes across as creepy. I imagine his children must be pretty embarrassed by this book today. He’s probably too dense and lacking in self awareness to see it’s problems, however.

This is an abridged version of the book but it’s done very well. The performance is incredible. Highly recommend this to people who are new to Ayn Rand.

You can’t beat listening to Eudora Welty read the best book ever written by Eudora Welty recorded in her house in Jackson, Mississippi where the book was also written and where you can literally hear the birds outside in her garden chirping on occasion.

Couldn’t stand the narrator

The story itself was OK albeit a bit trashy and borderline Harlequin romance-esque with some homophobic undertones. Where this really became almost unbearable was with the narrator. His voice was just very unpleasant to listen to and over the top. The yelling scenes were particularly awful. I had to constantly adjust the volume because he was just SCREAMING the angry dialogue.

This audiobook was a little never ending. The narrator wasn’t very engaging and sounded bored the entire time. Not knowing much about Ayn Rand, I thought the book itself was a little mean spirited and even slanderous. It seems like the author really hates Rand and her followers which kind of makes me wonder why he wanted to write a whole book about the subject. He makes Rand seem like an absolutely miserable person but in the process comes across as fairly miserable himself. After a while it got really tedious to listen to; however, I’m glad I powered through. I will say the final chapter was by far the meanest. It made me feel sorry for Rand and for the author who hates her so much.
