Bizarre
Revisado: 03-12-22
I hesitate to give this title a very low rating. However, the structure of the story was hard for me to follow. I bought this after reading the summery and having it in my wish list for a long while. So, I was quite disappointed to find the story very hard to follow for the first 4-5 hours. The narrator did very well. each character had a distinct voice, and I could tell each character from one another. However, the story was very disjointed at the beginning, it hopped from a werewolf hunting character, to college student drama, and I had to go back two or three times before I realized that one character had survived a werewolf attack.
I love werewolf stories, but this one hit the wrong notes for me.
(Trigger and spoiler warning for everything after this.)
There are blatant incestuous parts littered through the story, a dream sequence that had verbal, physical and sexual abuses pointed towards one of the main characters. along with a father who is lusting and repeatedly fantasizes about raping his daughter. along with the male characters (minus two) casually treating the female characters like sexual playthings...
I'm usually okay with novels written to a darker theme, (I didn't even blink at The Deep by Nick Cutter or the sexual misadventures in Lora Leigh's Breeds series.) But this novel caused my skin to crawl in the worst way, and while I was able to finish the novel, I was more than a little uncomfortable by the time I reached the end. I won't be continuing in the series (it ended on a cliffhanger), and I doubt I'll be reading more from this author.

Historia
Living off the land and adapting to a changing environment takes a special individual with the unique skills, training, and determination necessary to survive. Gus Berry is not that individual. The former house painter barely made it out of Annapolis as its population underwent a violent transformation, leaving everyone he knew or loved dead—or undead. Now, Gus needs food and booze, weapons and armor, clothing that fits, and above all, toilet paper, preferably two-ply.

Revisado: 02-15-22
When I first read this series, back when i found the omnibus of 1-3 three and a half years ago, I was struck by one thing that no one else had hit on.
Toilet paper.
While this series has touched on a number of other topics, and is still one of my favorites, the realism I found in this series compared to others was a welcome surprise. I continue to plan on reading/listening to it, and commend Mr. Blackmore in his forethought of little things that none of us question.
I also pray that RC Bray continues to narrate it. His vocal skills bring Gus and other characters a life of their own.

Historia
Vasilis "Billy" Kostopolos is a Bay Area Rust Belt refugee, a failed sci-fi writer, a successful barfly, and, since the exceptionally American zombie apocalypse, an accomplished "driller" of reanimated corpses. There aren't many sane, well-adjusted human beings left in San Francisco, but facing the end of the world, Billy's found his vocation trepanning the undead, peddling his one and only published short story, and drinking himself to death.

Bypass if you're looking for a zombie book
Revisado: 08-03-21
This is not, ABSOLUTELY NOT, a zombie book until the last hour of the book. This is more like a comedy/tragedy set during a zombie post/apocalypse. The main character isn't very likeable, though he does have character development by the end.
However the plot is very very hard to follow. Half the time they're just drinking in the bar with tons of
background character descriptions that add nothing to the story or he's pining for a drink, and the other time you're in flashbacks about his life before the dead walked. There is very little tieing the plot together.
It's good for listening as background noise. The narrator does a fantastic job of bringing the characters to life. Unfortunately, that's really the only thing going for this audiobook. It was free so i didnt lose much getting it, but probably won't listen again.

I absolutely loved this novel. the story is solid, and kept at a good pace to keep you engaged. R.C. Bray has become one of my favorite narrators bwcause of how well he captures the characters and brings them to life. Add the great surprise at the end and *mwa* perfection.

interesting.
Revisado: 06-08-21
Firstly, I read some of the other lower starred reviews and I dont think they were wholely unjust. this book can be boring at times; the plot spans more than one book and that can be off putting to some. however, unlike some books Ive listened too. this author does well with describing scenery and the problems faced by those forced into change.
I enjoyed many of the characters, and the ending left it open to many different scenarios. the narrator is one of my favorites, though his voice does become monotonous at times.

Historia
East Antarctica: the coldest, most desolate location on earth. Two-and-a-half miles below the ice cap is Vostok, a 6,000 square mile liquid lake, over 1,000 feet deep, left untouched for more than 15 million years. Now, marine biologist Zachary Wallace and two other scientists aboard a submersible tethered to a laser will journey 13,000 feet beneath the ice into this unexplored realm to discover Mesozoic life-forms long believed extinct - and an object of immense power responsible for the evolution of modern man.

while i greatly enjoyed the characterization and the soul the narrator's wonderful performance brought. The novel itself was quite jumpy and slightly hard to follow.
