Historia
When Remy's grandmother dies, it means leaving her life in San Francisco and returning to a town she swore she'd never revisit, forced to confront a world she'd worked hard to put behind her over the last twelve years. She's not expecting that the first girl to ever steal her heart, the pretty, popular Fallon Lewis, is still around, and in a town this small, their paths continue to cross, much to Remy's dismay. It's hard enough seeing her first love, but it's exponentially more difficult when she can barely stand to look at the woman.

Beware descriptors used instead of names and pronouns
Revisado: 12-17-24
Lori Prince did a great job. I actually felt sorry for her at having to read this hot mess. I love a second-chance romance but The Blonde and The Brunette and the misused words made this a hard book to get through.

Terrible Narration of Verity
Revisado: 06-24-24
The narrator who does Verity sounds more like a text-to-speech voice, except not as human. I got the audiobook on sale for about $3 and don't think I'll be able to finish it. I'm halfway through and just can't take much more.

Historia
Slough House is a dumping ground for British intelligence agents who've screwed up cases in any number of ways - by leaving a secret file on a train or blowing a surveillance. River Cartwright, one such "slow horse", is bitter about his failure and about his tedious assignment transcribing cell phone conversations. When a young man is abducted and his kidnappers threaten to broadcast his beheading live on the Internet, River sees an opportunity to redeem himself.

Wonderfully flawed characters
Revisado: 12-08-23
I wanted to read Slow Horses ever since I watched the first episode of the Apple TV show. Now I can say they’ve done a great job and of adapting it.
The characters are very well done. Especially Lamb. Gerard Doyle does a fine job but I do wish there had been more voice acting. I suppose there were too many characters for a single guy to come up with individual voices for them all. I did love his voice for Lamb though.
It was such a nice change to read a book about spies that weren’t Evan Smoak or James Bond.

Moderately disappointed
Revisado: 11-30-23
I really enjoyed the first in the series but this one is filled with so much redundant information, loads of exposition and stiff, unnatural dialogue that I legitimately struggled to finish.

Nice romance and nice narration
Revisado: 11-29-23
Easy to listen to first-time romance that was exactly what I was looking for today. No major drama or angst really. The narrator did a fine job. I will absolutely give the author another read. This was my first of her work.

Historia
Stoicism is a branch of Hellenistic philosophy founded by Zeno of Citium in Athens in the third century BC, though it was made popular by practitioners such as Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, and Seneca. The philosophy primarily espouses that virtue (wisdom) alone leads to happiness, and that we don't have the power control all external circumstances though we can control our responses.

Short and informative
Revisado: 04-12-22
I didn’t listen to the first in the series but have studied stoicism quite a bit and am familiar with the material it covered. The second in the series gives a good overview of the primary tenants and offers 70 affirmations and 6 exercises to get folks new to stoic practice on their way.
A good beginner listen.

Had high hopes after enjoying the first half
Revisado: 08-02-21
But then it all fell apart. And badly. Can’t go into much because of spoilers but this ends up being one of those “if only they’d talked honestly to each other…” books. And the climax (not the sexual ones) was so over the top and out of nowhere that I wanted to just stop and call it done. Very disappointing.

Not a Winner for Me
Revisado: 07-20-21
I realize that I'm way off from the vast majority of the other reviews I've seen but I had so many issues with this book that I couldn't rate it any higher.
First and foremost were the constant head-hopping (moving from one character's POV to the next to the next, etc within a scene with no break or warning whatsoever) and essentially using eye and hair color as pronouns. There was also no background info that I remember about any of the characters and they really did feel flat to me. I mean, besides the crushing grief of Susan dying, I didn't have anything else to connect to the characters with.
The conversations that were revealed in the second half of the book that took place between Blair regarding Ali felt super creepy and gross to me. I had a tough time imagining Susan and Blair checking Ali out together. I understand what the author was trying to do and I get it but the execution didn't work for me at all. Really, I'd have to say that very little worked for me from the beginning right up until the unnecessary misunderstanding and refusal to communicate at the very end.
I'm very glad that so many people loved this book but it was definitely not for me. The only reason I finished it was because I got a free copy of the audiobook from Audiobooks Unleashed and felt an obligation to post a review.
