One Punch Man goes surprisingly dark
Revisado: 11-20-23
Starts off light with a lot of the same joke, but rapidly moves on to examine topics of depression, self introspection, and identity, maintaining humor throughout.

Historia
Auben Mutze has more vices than he can deal with - six to be exact - each branded down his arm for the world to see. They mark him as a lesser twin in society, as inferior, but there’s no way he’ll let that define him. Intelligent and outgoing, Auben’s spirited antics make him popular among the other students at his underprivileged high school. So what if he’s envious of his twin Kasim, whose single vice brand is a ticket to a better life, one that likely won’t involve Auben. Then Auben starts hearing voices that speak to his dangerous side - encouraging him to perform evil deeds....

This book was absolutely wonderful. It was surprising and illuminating and engaged all of my senses. The narrator is absolutely fantastic and adds volumes.

Historia
Stories of Your Life and Others presents characters who must confront sudden change-the inevitable rise of automatons or the appearance of aliens-while striving to maintain some sense of normalcy. In the amazing and much-lauded title story (the basis for the 2016 movie Arrival), a grieving mother copes with divorce and the death of her daughter by drawing on her knowledge of alien languages and non-linear memory recollection.

All of these should be movies.

Fantastic and refreshing approach to science fiction. I would love to see these done as feature films, or perhaps episodes of black mirror. One story has already made it to the silver screen. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this book.

Historia
The culmination of nearly 30 years of reporting on Donald Trump, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter David Cay Johnston takes a revealingly close look at the mogul's rise to power and prominence. Covering the long arc of Trump's career, Johnston tells the full story of how a boy from a quiet section of Queens, New York, would become an entirely new and complex breed of public figure. Trump is a man of great media savvy, entrepreneurial spirit, and political clout. Yet, his career has been plagued by legal troubles and mounting controversy

Very informative, brief.

No wasted ink on these pages. They barely read with more continuity than a bullet list, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The details that are present are useful, and paint a disturbing picture of the man who would be president.

Historia
It's America in 1962. Slavery is legal once again. The few Jews who still survive hide under assumed names. In San Francisco, the I Ching is as common as the Yellow Pages. All because some twenty years earlier the United States lost a war - and is now occupied by Nazi Germany and Japan.

Technically decent, but ugh.

Racist, sexist characters. Unfulfilling ending. Uncomfortable narration of Japanese characters. Doesn't understand the alternate history genre. Not as good as the show.
I'm willing to give it a pass on the racism, since that was part of the point of writing the book and it was written in the sixties, but there are some truly cringeworthy moments. It's a product of it's times. What I can't forgive is the terrible ending. The ending was more like a comma than a period. It didn't resolve anything, really, it leaves characters in varying degrees of danger and at dramatically different points in their arcs without a second glance. Even worse, the book seems to fail to recognize the purpose of alternate history. I can't say more without spoilers, but I mean that in the barest sense of the term, since there is almost nothing to spoil. The narration was bordering on outright racist, but after a while it grew on me. Give it a chance, or watch the show. The show is telling an almost totally different story, and I think, doing a better job building out the details of the world and the characters.
I watched the show first, and I only got this book to figure out what had happened in Europe and Africa, as it only hints in the show. The book gives more details, but only just. Dick outlines a few horrors but leaves the rest to the imagination.
