Historia
Lesbian bars have always been treasured safe spaces for their customers, providing not only a good time but a shelter from societal alienation and outright persecution. In 1987, there were 206 of them in America. Today, only a couple dozen remain. How and why did this happen? What has been lost—or possibly gained—by such a decline? What transpires when marginalized communities become more accepted and mainstream? In Moby Dyke, Krista Burton attempts to answer these questions firsthand, venturing on an epic cross-country pilgrimage to the last few remaining dyke bars.

An old dykes guide to new lesbianism
Revisado: 11-13-23
Being in my seventies this book was a joy. I haven't been to a lesbian bar in years. I loved the memories this book brought back, enjoyed the insights and was intrigued by the new language of queer. Also one of the best descriptions of being an x Mormon I have ever read.

Wish someone else had read the book!
Revisado: 11-13-23
I have always been intrigued by Chita Rivera. I was looking forward to hearing her story and thought it would be a plus that she was reading it. I was wrong, her reading was halting and at times stilted which made what she was saying less effective. I also thought the book jumped around time wise a great deal making it hard to follow the chronology of events in her life. That being said she remains one of the most remarkable women of American Theatre.

Historia
Among the most celebrated and beloved novels of 2021, Anthony Doerr’s gorgeous third novel is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope—and a book. In Cloud Cuckoo Land, Doerr has created a magnificent tapestry of times and places that reflects our vast interconnectedness—with other species, with each other, with those who lived before us, and with those who will be here after we’re gone.

Loved Loved Loved the Performance
Revisado: 02-23-22
One of the best audible books ever. I have so many I want to hear, yet I keep thinking I want to go back and have another listen to this really interesting, unusual book. When I knew it was coming to an end I keep putting off finishing it. Given than prior to that I often took the long way home so I could hear more of it. This is one I have bought for several of my family. I loved it.

Historia
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Historia
Set in the 19th century, Isabel Miller's classic lesbian novel traces the relationship between Patience White and Sarah Dowling, whose romantic bond does not sit well with their puritanical New England community. In addition to being an inspiring love story, the audiobook for Patience and Sarah is an ideal listen for young-adult audiences. It is a story that shows how irrelevant race, religion, and gender are to love and that loving and being loved are what keep us human and sane.

One of the best books I've ever read
Revisado: 02-23-22
I met these women years ago. I have only reread 5 books in my life, this is one. The audible version of this work is outstanding. Jean Smart and Janis Ian are perfection, the writing is so lovely I didn't want the book to end. Oh, if only all of us could speak so eloquently even for just a day. I bought the paperback to give to my 17 year old granddaughter. I can't wait for her to read it so we can have lunch and revisit these wonderful women.

Historia
Young Hiram Walker was born into bondage. When his mother was sold away, Hiram was robbed of all memory of her - but was gifted with a mysterious power. Years later, when Hiram almost drowns in a river, that same power saves his life. This brush with death births an urgency in Hiram and a daring scheme: to escape from the only home he’s ever known. So begins an unexpected journey that takes Hiram from the corrupt grandeur of Virginia’s proud plantations to desperate guerrilla cells in the wilderness, from the coffin of the South to dangerously idealistic movements in the North.

Did not want this book to end
Revisado: 05-06-21
I loved this book. The language was lyrical and mesmerizing. The performance was spot on. So many different characters and yet different voices for each male and female. I listen for several days. And when I knew I was close to the end, I kept putting it off. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes literature, fiction based on fact.

Historia
Set against the backdrop of America emerging from World War I, Cakewalk provides an entertaining look at a small town straddling the Mason Dixon line, where the townsfolk remain split between good and bad, or love and sex, or male and female, or politics and sobriety, and the inimitable, irrepressible, distinctly free-thinking Hunsenmier sisters, Louise and Julia - otherwise known as Wheezie and Juts - and their wide circle of equally indelible friends are coming of age.

This was such an unexpected delight. Old friends in their youth. Made me dream of horseback riding and made me smile for hours. I want to reread or listen to all the books with these characters again.

Just as I Am is my truth. It is me, plain and unvarnished, with the glitter and garland set aside. Here, I am indeed Cicely, the actress who has been blessed to grace the stage and screen for six decades. Yet I am also the church girl who once rarely spoke a word. I am the teenager who sought solace in the verses of the old hymn for which this book is named. I am a daughter and mother, a sister, and a friend. I am an observer of human nature and the dreamer of audacious dreams.

Got hooked
Revisado: 10-30-20
Interestingly I really didn’t like the heroine of this book. However I found myself riding around until the chapter ended. It holds your interest, it’s a little spooky so it was fun to read just a couple of days before Halloween. I would recommend it to people who like just enough spooky and a decent story.
