Historia
Part memoir, part guidebook, and part social history, For Small Creatures Such as We is the first book from the daughter of Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan - a luminous exploration of Earth's marvels that require no faith in order to be believed. As Sagan shares these rituals, For Small Creatures Such as We becomes a moving tribute to a father, a newborn daughter, a marriage, and the natural world - a celebration of life itself, and the power of our families and beliefs to bring us together.

Inspiring, Poignant, Beautiful
Revisado: 12-16-21
As a secular humanist (atheist), it's perhaps even more important than it was when I was a theist to forge my own blend of traditional and new in the rituals and observances of life's glorious journey.
Sasha Sagan writes with just a hint of her parents' voices, yet fully her own. She reminds us that the beauty of life is, in a secular sense, sacred, and worthy of celebrating.

Historia
Astonishingly irrational ideas are spreading. COVID-19 denial, anti-vaxxers compromising public health, conspiracy thinking hijacking minds and inciting mob violence, toxic partisanship cleaving our nations, the return of Flat Earth theory… What the heck is going on? Why is all this happening, and why now? More important, what can we do about it? Does our “right to our opinion” trump our responsibilities? Does the resulting ethos effectively compromise mental immune systems, allowing “mind parasites” to overrun them? Are conspiracy theories, evidence-defying ideologies, and ...

Excellent Topic and Discussion!
Revisado: 05-13-21
I was riveted to this discussion. I've become interested in philosophy over the last few years but especially the last few months, but I'm also very interested in science, secular humanism, epistemology, etc. This discussion brought these topics into focus. I'm sure to listen to this episode a few more times and take notes for further research.

Historia
From colonial times into the 20th century, our laws and court cases ignored atheism, assuming that all good Americans were religious. Only in the 20th century, with the passage of laws allowing for conscientious objection to war, did nonbelief enter debates about religious liberty. Still, today every one of the 20 states has God written into its constitution. God is everywhere in American public life. R. Laurence Moore and Isaac Kramnick explore both God's omnipresence and the dramatic rise in nonbelievers that has led to an "atheist awakening" intent on holding the country to its secular principles.

Detailed historical look at religion & atheism
Revisado: 10-23-20
This was a thoroughly enjoyable book that scrutinizes the American experience of both religion and atheism from our beginning to modern day. I've listened to this book twice and will most likely listen at least once more, as its packed with information. I would recommend this book to anyone, whether religious, spiritual or not.

Historia
Religious fundamentalists and biblical literalists present any number of arguments that attempt to disprove evolution. Those with a sympathetic ear often fail to critically examine these creationist claims, leading to an ill-informed public and, perhaps more troubling, ill-advised public policy. As Aron Ra makes clear, however, every single argument deployed by creationists in their attacks on evolution is founded on fundamental scientific, religious, and historical falsehoods - all of them.

Absolutely fantastic book!
Revisado: 07-12-20
I learned more about the facts of evolution, biological science, and paleontology in such a clear and interesting manner than I ever have before! Aron Ra delivers complex information in such an easy to understand way that draws the listener in. He easily refutes all common Christian apologetics with a touch of well-deserved and nicely played snark. I've started this book for a second listen and have purchased the physical book to take notes, dog-ear pages, highlight passages and do further research. I absolutely love this book!!

Historia
Women have made great strides toward equal rights over the past 100 years, especially in the West. But when considering the ongoing fight over reproductive rights and equal pay - and the prevalence of sexual violence and domestic abuse - it is clear that a significant gap still exists. With scripture often cited as justification for the marginalization of women, it is time to acknowledge that one of the final barriers to full equality for women is religion.

Hearing the stories of women who found their way out of religion was inspiring. I also found myself reflecting on my own journey. Every woman should read this book.
