I was hanging out with some buddies, doing a little caving, when everything went south. When I woke up, I was in some kind of medieval dungeon. Totally naked and in the dark. Luckily, I had a neighbor in a cell near me. One with a decidedly sexy feminine voice. When she explained to me that she was due to be executed and I was in line to be brainwashed, there was only one thing to do. We had to escape.

good time waster and good scenes

Good performance, MC sucks

Spoilers ahead:
The book has an excessive amount of spicy scenes (probably 15-20% of the book is spicy scenes) because the MC is the only free thinking man because he isekai’d in. The bigger issue is late in the series they capture the beautiful leader of the government that orchestrated the mind washing of all men and that rules with a violent regime. However, demons are coming and her entire reason for effectively enslaving all men was to prevent the demon invasion her mom prophesied. So MC and the resistance work with the books’ female Hitl*r (which is a comparison the MC makes). Then MC sympathizes with her because she has good intention but made a bad choice (of overthrowing all governments and brainwashing all men) so he ends up hooking up with her. The vast majority of people around MC wanted her executed when she was captured but nope, he bangs the hot chick.
Performance: The narrators did a great job.

The first women the MC gets into a relationship has a daughter. Later the MC adds the daughter to his harem and the mom is okay with it as long as they don’t talk details. Later in the series, the MC adds a female that had been threatening to the daughter to the harem and daughter and mom are okay with it. Stopped listening at that point. Narrator did a great job but couldn’t keep going.

Disappointing is an understatement

What would have made Severed Souls better?
Severed Souls would have been a better book if it was written in a similar style as the first 11 books in the Sword of Truth series. The last three (Omen Machine, Third Kingdom and Severed Souls) are far darker than any of the first series. After reading them, I sincerely wish they had not been written. I might read the next one, but will more likely read a summary of the plot first to see if it continues down the path these three have been following.
Has Severed Souls turned you off from other books in this genre?
Not from the genre but probably from the author. At least when George RR Martin kills off characters, he does it a little nicer.
