Historia
Behind the tall, foreboding gates of a commune in Brazil, Daniella Mestyanek Young was raised in the religious cult The Children of God, also known as The Family, as the daughter of high-ranking members. Her great-grandmother donated land for one of The Family’s first communes in Texas. Her mother, at thirteen, was forced to marry the leader and served as his secretary for many years. Beholden to The Family’s strict rules, Daniella suffers physical, emotional, and sexual abuse—masked as godly discipline and divine love—and is forbidden from getting a traditional education.

Check your systems for the power holders
Revisado: 07-22-24
This was one of the most impactful, eye opening, well organized retellings I’ve ever come across. The author does an amazing job of walking the reader (listener) through her life experiences, which are fascinating and heartbreaking. It will have you wondering how to fix systems of power so fewer people are harmed. As someone who has left a high demand religion and who hosts a support group for those leaving similar groups, I found this enlightening and engaging, and as mentioned before, incredibly heartbreaking. I am amazed at her journey, and her healing process, which I’m sure is ongoing. Highly recommend!

Choosing who is worth listening to
Revisado: 04-22-24
Where are the happy people and why are they happy? That is a question I started asking at an early age because the adults around me were definitely not happy and I didn’t want to live that way any longer than I had to. Listening to books like this helps me learn how to make a meaningful life for myself and those who have to interact with me. This book is engaging, thought provoking and valuable for cycle breakers like myself, or anyone who wants to brighten their life and have healthier relationships along the way. As with any book, some things didn’t hit the mark with me, but overall, an excellent read and I’d highly recommend it. I’m glad I stumbled across a YouTube video that made me curious to know more about Gladys McGarey!

Historia
In her therapy practice specializing in grief, Smith confronts the quandary of what happens next. In a dynamic five-part structure, she answers the unanswerable questions - will I ever see my parents again? Can my parents see me now, even though they are gone? Will I remain connected to my own daughters when I die? - for herself and for all of us.

A journey worth knowing
Revisado: 01-08-23
The author does an impressive job of sharing her quest to understand what happens after we die. I have recently left organized religion and have been looking into a variety of spiritual pathways and concepts. This book resonated deeply and helped in ways I cannot adequately explain. I highly recommend this to any fellow seekers out there.

Historia
The secret to raising the happiest kids in the world? Whatever it is, it's somewhere in the Netherlands. Kids in the US face lots of pressure to excel - often at the expense of happiness. But does it have to be this way? Not in the Netherlands! In The Happiest Kids in the World, expats Rina Mae Acosta and Michele Hutchison - both married to Dutchmen and bringing up their kids in the Netherlands - examine the unique environment that enables the Dutch to turn out such well-adjusted, independent children.

Insightful
Revisado: 01-15-22
I appreciate the view offered by women who did not grow up Dutch, but are raising their kids in the Netherlands. The contrasts are offered simply and in a candid manner. If we want to do a better job of raising American children into happy, functional, positively contributing adults who didn’t feel the need to rebel in adolescence, then this should be required reading for parents, teachers, and anyone who interacts with our children.
