One of the best books I've ever read

This is a great book and greatly needed right now! For anyone who's ever wondered "how could they think (or vote) the way they do" (i.e. everyone) - this book makes a giant step towards understanding, no matter what your point of view. Better still it provides a potential road map to reach those you presently cannot fathom.

Great read on health care reform

Author does a great job of informing on the logic and shortfalls of the different sides of healthcare reform debates - and great insights on how we might all get on the same side against this issue that is not going away on its own.

Most amusing book about plagues you'll ever read!

Ms. Wright does a wonderful job of portraying the horrors of these plagues but is very careful (and successful) in keeping a focus on the humanity of those affected by it...both in frailty and in great courage. By doing so she conveys very valuable lessons for the next time we, as a society, face such a threat. And despite the serious nature of the subject matter, she consistently finds the right way to accent the humor to be found - no small feat in discussing plagues and maintaining respect for human nature under duress. Gabra Zackman's narration catches that mix of gravity, reverence and humor perfectly.

Amazing story you won't hear anywhere else

This book brings together great stories that you are unlikely to ever hear elsewhere. Ms Wilkerson's storytelling is superbly complemented by Ms. Miles narration. The first half of the book was completely engrossing and painted a picture of what life was like for those in the Jim Crow days of the South that was eye-opening and unforgettable. As a white man born in the North towards the end of this Great Migration, it sheds new light on what I have seen in my lifetime, up to and including today. It should be required reading for anyone interested or involved in recent discussions of reparations (though the book does not discuss this in any way) - both from the perspective of why this remains a topic of discussion and what efforts may (or may not) be helpful. These stories of the heroics and heartbreaks of everyday people should be a point of connection and reflection for any American.

Hits just the right note - it points out the prevalence of introversion, the benefits of it, the obstacles of it and incorporating research whenever available offers meaningful ideas for individuals, educators and business people to recognize the potentially hidden value and skills as well as how to optimize the realization of them.

Shapiro's approach contradicts his thesis

I had heard of but never read or seen Shapiro himself before. I agree with him re: the value of free speech and open debate of ideas, which is why I chose to listen to this book. His conclusions that we need to hold onto the values that have been passed down to us, and pass them down to our children are important arguments. His underlying thesis that we are the inheritors of a great (though not flawless) cultural tradition based on reason and strong values is well founded. In making this argument he runs through an impressive array of Western thinkers, but does so in a cursory fashion and presents judgment on them based on very narrow selections of their work. Ultimately he appears to discard most without really presenting a fair view of them - even though this is exactly what he suggests he's against. I'm fortunate enough to have read many of the works he references (and by his own report dismantles); it is sad to think that his interpretation may be the only one many of his readers will ever hear. He is defending reasoned argument and open debate but doing so by presenting only a fraction of the other side and not applying sincere reason. The best example of this I recall was his comparison of the relative strength of Western vs Muslim culture, that basically the Christians won the Battle of Tours, therefore Western civilization is superior. Such flimsy argument/conclusions contradict his (well-founded) thesis on the value of seeking truth by using reason applied to full presentation of arguments.

A must for anyone interested in Nietzsche

A must read for anyone who wishes to fully understand Nietzsche (however vain that hope may be!) This is no "dry biography" but from beginning to end a wonderful collage of insights into the man, the people in his life, the circumstances of his writings and maybe most of all how his works were affected and presented after his time had passed - to significant effect on our world to this day. The description "Human, all too human" appears to apply to its author too, though how that affects our view of his works, as Nietzsche might prefer it, remains up to us. Sue Prideaux has created an excellent study and Nicholas Guy Smith adds even more with his superb reading.

Fantastic story of the science of evolution

I missed Bill Nye in his "Science Guy" days but this book shows why he was so popular. Entertaining and funny explanations of the science behind evolution. He doesn't skimp on the science and yet tells the story in an incredibly accessible way. No matter what your science background, his use of examples and stories paint the picture wonderfully.
