Historia
Brin is scarred, but no longer alone. After giving up his evil Rare Class in exchange for the simple and common Glasser, he’s finally been accepted by the people of Hammon’s Bog. But acceptance doesn't guarantee safety. Mirrors and glass spearheads offer little protection against threats both outside and within. An army of undead is lurking in the surrounding forest, cutting them off from the rest of the world. There’s no rescue in sight, and worse, no one knows why the army is there or when it will attack.

a good continuation, great narration.
Revisado: 02-03-25
The story is solid, definitely big standard haha. The twist I didn't see coming and wish we'd gotten a better explanation of HOW it happened, but it was good. The ending felt a little dues ex machina even with the clear foreshadowing.
but what I really wanted to drop a review for was the narration. Jonathan gives the BEST stat reads of any isekai/progression fantasy I've read. I've never had a stat read delivery make me laugh out loud while also being so quickly delivered. the rest of the voice acting was also great but the stat reads were a high stand out for the genre.

Very science magi
Revisado: 09-18-24
The story was solid, and the performance was great. And honestly, finally seeing a male protagonist in the genre who might be some shade of G/B is really really exciting to me. Nothing has happened yet, but even just commenting on appearance here or there has been really nice. It's no where near as gratuitous as most LitRPG descriptions of women get. which I think is good. I do hope he eventually does have something happen. I so rarely get any fantasy MCs sharing a sexuality, I really hope something real happens for him.
Beyond representation - the magic of this world is very interestingly scientific. it's fun to see instead of the stars aligning or some gods blessing, the MC is useful/important because of his knowledge. It somewhat reminds me of Chrysalis - that author seems very into ants and the passion shows. this one has a lot of good knowledge about general sciences it seems and it makes the read all the more interesting.
I don't thinkt he story itself is quite up to HHFWM or DotF, at least not for me just yet. But I'm hooked and looking forward to what limits his knowledge can break. And HOPEFULLY a gay kiss or romance at some point.

the best in the series, but I'm viased
Revisado: 06-26-24
The Wandering Inn is my favourite series. the storytelling, the characters, the depth, the length - everything. So when Pirataba brings in witches, I'm not at all nervous. I love witches, the stories, the vibes, the unique brand of magic, and the book delivers on all fronts.
The story continues for Erin and friends, but there is a clear focus of this book, more so than in the others. Not saying that's good or bad - just a fact.
The ending also ranks #1 for tempting me to look up a spoiler. I have several series coming out with new entries this summer, and it's still going to be painful waiting for the next audiobook.
ALSO, can't forget the about Andrea Parsneau. She's incredible as always. Her narration, voices, delivery are all top notch. She brings character to this story that could not be matched via reading it myself.

amazing story, a few hiccups
Revisado: 12-15-22
Love the series, and Heath Miller is astounding as ever. However, there were a few times in the recording where it suddenly stopped and then cut back in a few words later, like they paused to cough, but unpaused too late. I tried replaying them a few times to make sure it wasn't my device.
as for the story itself it's still top tier, but around 4-5 hours left it felt like Shirtaloon started writing a new book. Suddenly we were getting a lot of extra explanations for things that just happened a chapter or two before. I appreciate when he opens books with those as it helps me regain my bearings between books, but happening towards the end of a book it just felt very repetitive.
That said, still a solid recommendation and I will be preordering the next book no questions asked.

Historia
When virtual reality becomes real enough that people feel as if they're being transported to another world, Valia Online arrives. A man running from his past joins the game to forget it all. Calling himself Jack Thorn, he chooses an undead race, Deathlord. A mage by choice, and a swordsman by necessity, he soon finds out that he'll need to use much more than magic and steel to survive; strategy, creativity, and carefully chosen words can often accomplish what simple attacks can't.

A 16 year old edgelord incel's dream
Revisado: 11-10-22
When I came across this book I admit I was a bit excited. I like to see some variation in the LitRPG space, and this presented as a departure from the stock standard protagonist. Also, Jeff Hays gives stellar performances, and while I couldn't stand the story, he once again carried the show.
I managed to struggle through about 10 hours of this book but the constant homophobic and misogynistic situations, thoughts and actions of the main character pushed me past the breaking point. The red flags started pretty early on, but I didn't want to judge the book so early as I saw some people mention character development.. but there just wasn't any. The number of times the MC talks about how much he hates manipulative/emotionally abusive tactics and then immediately follows with "classic woman" is staggering. Yet he still claims he "gets chicks." At one point saying alls it takes is having a boat.
If the above wasn't enough, the character is also textbook edgelord against all odds. I often think about what protagonist's lives are like outside of the game/other world etc. but every mention to his felt like a 12 year old writting their first dnd rogues backstory... but worse? And he finds himself in constant situations that seem to put him at an insane disadvantage to most other players, but somehow does something that doesn't make much sense and breaks the game. All while being given the highest praise by the AI leveling system.

Jason arrives at a kingdom in peril and he's surprised to discover that it's not his job to save it. With the authorities fulfilling their responsibilities (for once), he looks forward to some quiet time to rest and recuperate. The locals might not find ceaseless monster onslaughts and an interdimensional invasion relaxing, but Jason has had a rough few years. He's doing his best to let go of his anger. While his team is caught up in duty, Jason has no shortage of people looking to interfere with his rest. Enemies—old and new—are circling, and even would-be allies are trouble.

almost filler
Revisado: 09-15-22
honestly this book feels a bit more relaxed than the others, bordering on filler episode territory based on how much plot progressed.
that said, it was still phenomenal. I think it says a lot about the quality of the series that I'd still easily give this a 5*

The world teeters on the brink of destruction. The people who should be saving the Earth ignore Jason Asano's warnings and choose to loot the house as it burns down around them. He lacks the strength to save the world himself, but resolves to do it anyway, impossible be damned. The impossible, in this case, means seizing a power that no mortal should touch. It's a choice from which there is no turning back, and marks Jason's first step into a wider cosmos that he is not yet ready to face. Holding the fate of two worlds in his hands, Jason must decide for himself what home truly means.

not a filler story
Revisado: 07-05-22
so I've seen a number of reviews call this a filler story but it didn't seem like that to me at all. this was definitely more of a setup story, but it was definitely necessary and good listening for the overarching story.
while at some points it feels like a training montage that isn't paying enough dividends, by the end the importance is clear and it feels solid enough.
that said - shirtaloon has a habit of doing anime style flashbacks every chapter that grated on me a bit this book. like if something happened in literally the last chapter you don't have to re-explain it.
overall though, a solid entry and really helped build the feelings of being home and preparing to continue the journey onwards.
